Chapter 12 - What Dwight Expected His Father to Do

Ryan repeated the sentence for the record.

“You were supposed to scare her, not leave marks.”

Christopher asked whether anyone responded.

“Dad told him to shut up.”

“Did Dwight say anything else?”

Ryan nodded.

“He said the hospital would document everything.”

My stomach tightened.

Dwight had not been shocked by his father’s aggression.

He had been angry because the evidence was visible.

Ryan continued.

“Then Mom said Elizabeth would come back once she calmed down.”

“What did Dwight say?”

“He said you wouldn’t.”

Ryan swallowed.

“He said, ‘She’s not that easy.’”

That was probably the closest Dwight had ever come to respecting me.

Christopher asked why Ryan had waited.

Ryan stared at the table.

“Because he’s my brother.”

“And now?”

“Because what they did was wrong.”

He looked at me.

“And because I watched it happen.”

Ryan had been immature.

Cruel enough to record instead of intervene.

But unlike the others, he appeared capable of shame.

I did not forgive him.

I also did not need to.

Truth did not require affection.

Christopher forwarded Ryan’s statement to investigators.

The next morning, police requested another interview with Dwight.

He declined.

His lawyer issued a statement saying any remarks Ryan remembered had been taken out of context.

Then Dwight did something unexpected.

He showed up at my office parking lot.

That violated the protective order.

I saw him beside my car and immediately stepped back inside the building.

Security called police.

Dwight did not run.

When officers arrived, he held up both hands.

“I just wanted two minutes.”

I watched through the glass doors.

He looked tired.

Older.

Smaller.

For years, Dwight had seemed confident because everyone around him rearranged reality to protect him.

Without that protection, he looked ordinary.

Police escorted him away.

His lawyer called Christopher furious.

Christopher was almost cheerful.

“Courts dislike people who treat orders as suggestions.”

The violation damaged Dwight badly.

Yet before officers placed him in the cruiser, he dropped an envelope beside my car.

Security collected it.

Christopher opened it later.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Dwight claimed Jared had threatened to cut him out of the family business unless he married me and obtained my investment.

He claimed Ashley had pursued him when he was vulnerable.

He claimed Susan had convinced him that every marriage involved financial sacrifice.

He claimed he never believed Jared would actually strike me.

Then came the sentence that destroyed whatever sympathy remained.

I thought once you invested, things would calm down and we could become a real married couple.

He truly believed stealing my financial freedom could be the foundation of love.

At the bottom, he wrote one final confession.

The apartment had always been a lie.

But there was another property.

A townhouse in Canton.

Jared planned to purchase it after my money arrived.

Not for Dwight and me.

May you like

For Dwight and Ashley.
