Chapter 3 - The Video They Cut Apart

For three seconds, anger almost defeated common sense.
I wanted to call the station.
I wanted to call Dwight.
I wanted to stand outside that apartment and tell every camera exactly what his family had done.
Christopher stopped me.
“Let them talk.”
“They’re making me look dangerous.”
“They’re also creating evidence.”
On television, Dwight described me as unstable.
Susan said she had welcomed me “like a daughter.”
Jared claimed he had merely tried to stop me from destroying furniture.
Ryan stood several feet behind them.
Unlike everyone else, he did not speak.
I noticed something strange about his expression.
He looked terrified.
Christopher noticed too.
“Do you still have the original video Ryan sent?”
“Yes.”
“Keep three copies.”
We sent one to a digital evidence specialist.
The specialist confirmed what we already knew.
The clip airing on television had been edited.
The original timestamp showed Jared blocking the door.
It showed me saying I wanted to leave.
It showed the first slap.
The second.
Dwight standing less than six feet away.
Susan watching.
Gemma laughing nervously.
And Ryan recording everything.
Only after that did I retrieve the metal bar from the balcony.
Only after that did the table break.
By noon, Christopher had sent the complete recording to the station’s legal department.
The edited clip vanished from their website forty-three minutes later.
The station issued a correction that evening.
Dwight’s strategy collapsed faster than I expected.
But Jared was not finished.
He filed a police report accusing me of criminal property damage.
Christopher accompanied me when detectives requested an interview.
I told them everything.
I showed them the hospital report.
The photographs.
The original video.
The texts.
The “Duties of the Daughter-in-Law” sheet.
The detective watched the recording twice.
Then he asked a question.
“Why was Mr. Jared standing between you and the only exit?”
“Because he told me I wasn’t allowed to leave.”
The detective looked at Christopher.
Then back at me.
The investigation changed direction.
By evening, Jared was no longer merely accusing me of breaking his table.
Police wanted to interview him about assault and unlawful restraint.
Dwight called again.
I let it go to voicemail.
His message lasted only twelve seconds.
“Elizabeth, call off your lawyer before you destroy this family.”
I listened twice.
Not once did he ask whether I was okay.
Not once did he apologize.
Amy sat beside me on the couch.
“He sounds scared.”
“He should be.”
My laptop chimed.
Someone had attempted to log into my email account.
Then my bank sent an alert.
A transfer request for thirty-nine thousand six hundred dollars had been submitted from the joint savings account Dwight controlled.
The destination was unfamiliar.
Christopher traced the routing information.
The receiving account belonged to Harbor House Holdings LLC.
I had never heard of it.
Twenty minutes later, he called me back.
“You’re going to want to see this.”
“Who owns Harbor House?”
“Dwight owns forty percent.”
My stomach dropped.
Christopher continued.
“Jared owns sixty.”
The forty-eight thousand dollars I had supposedly contributed toward our future apartment had never been used for an apartment at all.

And they were trying to move what remained before I could stop them.
