Chapter 16 - The Missing Fifth Page

The deleted page was not titled like the others.

It was called ESCALATION.

I read the word twice.

The document listed steps.

Step one: Susan introduces household expectations.

Step two: Dwight minimizes objections.

Step three: Jared reinforces family authority.

Step four: separate Elizabeth from outside support until agreement is discussed.

My stomach turned.

Step five: obtain financial consent.

Then came a note.

IF SHE ATTEMPTS TO LEAVE BEFORE CONSENT, DWIGHT MUST DE-ESCALATE AND RETAIN HER IN THE RESIDENCE.

Christopher pointed toward the wording.

“Retain her.”

I felt sick.

“That’s why Jared blocked the door.”

“Possibly.”

“Who wrote this?”

The document metadata identified Gemma.

But revision history showed comments from two other users.

Dwight.

Jared.

One comment from Dwight appeared beside the phrase retain her in the residence.

DON’T MAKE THIS SOUND ILLEGAL.

Jared responded.

THEN DON’T SHOW IT TO HER.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

There are moments when a lie dies completely.

Not weakens.

Not cracks.

Dies.

Dwight could no longer claim he had merely been manipulated by his father.

He had read the plan.

He had edited the plan.

He had objected only to the wording.

Christopher forwarded the page to investigators.

The evidence also strengthened our argument that my smashed table was an act occurring during an attempt to leave a coercive situation, not some unexplained violent outburst.

Then another detail surfaced.

Susan’s envelope had contained exactly one hundred dollars.

Why?

Nora found the answer in the family chat.

Susan: I’LL GIVE HER 100 FOR THE FIRST WEEK.

Gemma: FOR WHAT?

Susan: SO SHE CAN’T SAY SHE’S WORKING FOR FREE.

Ryan: THAT’S INSANE.

Jared: IT’S SYMBOLIC.

Susan: EXACTLY.

They knew how the arrangement looked.

They had tried to manufacture the appearance of payment.

One hundred dollars for cooking and cleaning for six adults.

A prop.

Like the fake apartment.

Like Jared’s fake wedding contribution.

Like Dwight’s fake marriage.

The old details had become evidence.

That afternoon, Christopher called with one more development.

The lender financing Harbor House had reviewed the forged commitment.

They were accelerating the company’s debt.

Harbor House had ten business days to cure the default or lose the warehouse and potentially the apartment used as collateral.

Jared’s empire was collapsing.

He requested another settlement meeting.

This time, I agreed to attend remotely.

Jared appeared on screen with his attorney.

He looked nothing like the man who had blocked my exit.

His confidence was gone.

“We can end this,” he said.

Christopher answered.

“Present your offer.”

Jared looked at me.

“You want money?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

I leaned toward the camera.

“Accountability.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re destroying my children’s future.”

“You used mine as collateral.”

He looked away.

For the first time, Jared had nothing to say.

And that was when Christopher placed our counterproposal on the table.

Full restitution.

Full disclosure.

No confidentiality clause.

And written admissions regarding the financial scheme.

May you like

Jared’s face turned white.
