Chapter 9 - THE CAMERA

A security technician found the camera inside a smoke detector.

It faced our bed.

I sat on the edge of the mattress staring at it.

The device was small enough that I would never have noticed.

“How long?”

I asked.

The technician checked the storage system.

“At least six months.”

Six months of private conversations.

Six months of changing clothes.

Six months of Lily climbing into our bed after nightmares.

Six months of my life captured without my knowledge.

Rebecca called the police.

Ethan denied installing it.

Margaret denied knowing anything about it.

Brooke refused to answer questions.

But the Wi-Fi registration changed everything.

The device had first been connected through Ethan’s phone.

He claimed he had installed it for home security and forgotten about it.

No one believed him.

Then investigators recovered cloud storage.

Hundreds of clips.

Most were useless.

Some were painfully ordinary.

But twelve clips had been downloaded and renamed.

HANNAH ANGRY 1.

HANNAH CRYING 3.

HANNAH THREATENS TO LEAVE.

The context had been removed.

In one video, I said, “One day I’m going to take Lily and disappear from this insanity.”

The clip ended there.

The complete recording revealed what came before it.

Margaret had called Lily manipulative.

Ethan had told me I was turning our daughter weak.

I had said I would remove Lily from any environment where adults bullied her.

Then came the sentence they saved.

Rebecca watched the video twice.

“They were editing your life.”

I nodded.

The phrase described everything perfectly.

The police seized Ethan’s laptop.

That evening, he came to my house alone.

He stayed outside the gate.

I spoke through the camera.

“Leave.”

“Hannah, please.”

“You’re violating boundaries.”

“I need five minutes.”

“You need a lawyer.”

“I made mistakes.”

That sentence stopped me.

Not because it meant anything.

Because Ethan Mercer never admitted mistakes.

“I was trying to keep peace in the family.”

“You secretly recorded me.”

“My mother convinced me it was necessary.”

“You filed against me.”

“She said you would take Lily.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I didn’t forge it.”

“Then who did?”

Silence.

I watched him through the monitor.

His shoulders lowered.

Then he said the one name I expected.

“Brooke.”

But he was not finished.

“My mother told her to do it.”

I gripped the counter.

“And you allowed it?”

May you like

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”
