Chapter 11 - THE WITNESSES

Once investigators started pulling at the Mercer family story, it unraveled quickly.

Lily’s former teacher remembered Ethan asking unusual questions.

Had I ever forgotten school events?

Did I appear overwhelmed?

Did Lily seem unusually dependent on me?

At the time, the teacher thought he was a concerned husband.

Now she understood what he had been collecting.

A neighbor remembered Margaret asking whether I yelled inside the house.

A pediatric nurse recalled Brooke calling the clinic and pretending to confirm medication instructions on my behalf.

Then came the strongest witness.

Dr. Vale’s assistant.

Her name was Jasmine Price.

She contacted Rebecca after learning subpoenas had been issued.

Jasmine brought emails.

In one, Margaret wrote:

WE DO NOT NEED A DIAGNOSIS YET.

WE NEED LANGUAGE SHOWING A PATTERN.

In another:

SHE WILL EVENTUALLY REACT.

WHEN SHE DOES, WE WANT THE RECORD TO MAKE IT LOOK INEVITABLE.

I read that sentence three times.

She will eventually react.

Margaret had understood exactly what she was doing.

Abuse someone long enough.

Provoke them often enough.

Record only their anger.

Then show the world the reaction and hide the cause.

Rebecca filed for sole temporary custody.

Ethan’s attorneys changed strategy.

They stopped denying everything.

Instead, they argued he had been manipulated by his mother.

He wanted to cooperate.

He wanted counseling.

He wanted to preserve his relationship with Lily.

I might have believed that once.

Then I learned Ethan had emptied our joint investment account.

Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars disappeared in one transfer.

Rebecca called immediately.

“He’s preparing.”

“For what?”

“Litigation.”

“Or leaving.”

She went silent.

That was the answer.

We requested a financial restraining order.

The judge granted it.

Too late.

Ethan had already transferred the money into an account tied to a company in the Cayman Islands.

That evening, Lily asked whether Daddy would come to her school play.

I did not know what to say.

“Yes.”

I finally answered.

“If he’s allowed.”

She looked down.

“I still love Daddy.”

My throat tightened.

“You’re allowed to.”

“But I’m mad at him.”

“You’re allowed to be that too.”

She thought for a moment.

“Can both be true?”

I kissed her forehead.

“Yes.”

That night, Rebecca called again.

“The police found something on Ethan’s laptop.”

“What?”

“A draft letter.”

“To whom?”

“You.”

I waited.

She continued.

“It was written three months ago.”

I felt cold.

“What did it say?”

May you like

Rebecca spoke slowly.

“It says you left voluntarily because you were having a psychological breakdown.”
