Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL

I grabbed Lily and went through the back door.
Rebecca had arranged for a private security officer to meet us two blocks away.
We reached him before the SUV moved.
Police later determined the vehicle belonged to Brooke.
Margaret was not inside.
Brooke claimed she had come to speak with me.
No one believed her.
Then we learned why Margaret had disappeared.
Ethan had warned her.
After everything.
After agreeing to cooperate.
After admitting the forgery conspiracy.
He had called Margaret from a prepaid phone.
Investigators recovered the call records.
Twenty-three minutes after Ethan learned prosecutors were considering an arrest warrant, Margaret left her house.
I confronted him at the next supervised custody hearing.
“You warned her.”
Ethan looked down.
“She’s my mother.”
“And Lily is your daughter.”
“I know.”
“No.”
My voice broke.
“You keep saying that, but every time you have to choose, you choose Margaret.”
He looked at me.
“I didn’t think she would run.”
“What did you think she would do?”
“I wanted her to get a lawyer.”
“She had three lawyers.”
He had no answer.
Lily’s therapist recommended suspending Ethan’s visits temporarily.
That crushed him.
For the first time, I saw genuine panic in his face.
Not fear for money.
Not fear of prison.
Fear of losing his daughter.
But consequences do not disappear just because someone finally understands them.
Three days passed without Margaret.
Then federal agents stopped her at the Canadian border.
She was carrying eighty thousand dollars in cash.
Two passports.
And a folder containing copies of Lily’s trust documents.
The red folder.
Lily had been right.
Inside were proposed petitions transferring part of Lily’s trust into Mercer Development Holdings.
Twenty-six million dollars.
Almost exactly the amount needed to cover the family companies’ most urgent debts.
There was also a handwritten note.
Brooke’s handwriting.
GET H TO LEAVE BEFORE QUARTER CLOSE.
H.
Me.
The night of the dress had happened six days before quarter close.
The slap had not been planned.
But the confrontation had.
Margaret had ordered Chloe to ask for Lily’s dress.
Brooke had pushed the argument.
Ethan had been instructed not to defend me.
They wanted me angry.
May you like
They wanted me gone.
And Margaret’s assault on Lily had been the uncontrolled spark that exposed the machine.
