Chapter 7 - LILY SPEAKS

The emergency hearing took place the next morning.

Ethan arrived with two attorneys.

Margaret sat behind him.

Brooke sat beside Margaret.

They looked like a family attending church.

Perfect clothes.

Calm faces.

Concerned expressions.

I understood the performance now.

Rebecca presented photographs from Elena.

Ethan’s attorney objected.

Rebecca presented the forged guardianship document.

They claimed I had forgotten signing it.

Then Rebecca presented Ethan’s text offering to restore visitation if I stopped accusing Margaret.

The judge read it twice.

Ethan shifted in his seat.

It was the first time I saw his confidence crack.

The judge ordered a child advocate to interview Lily privately.

Neither parent would be present.

I waited outside the interview room for forty-seven minutes.

When the advocate emerged, she looked directly at the judge.

“I recommend the child not be left unsupervised with the paternal grandmother until further investigation.”

Margaret jerked upright.

“That is outrageous.”

The judge looked at her.

“Sit down.”

Margaret sat.

The advocate continued.

“Lily described being slapped after refusing to surrender a dress.”

Ethan’s lawyer interrupted.

“The child has clearly been coached.”

The advocate turned.

“She also described her mother intervening and her aunt spitting at her mother.”

Brooke’s face went white.

I had never told Lily to repeat that.

I had barely spoken about it at all.

The advocate continued.

“Most significantly, Lily described a conversation she overheard several weeks ago.”

My heart stopped.

“What conversation?”

The judge asked.

The advocate consulted her notes.

“She says her grandmother told her father, quote, ‘Once Hannah finally snaps and leaves, we can finish this.’”

Every head in the courtroom turned toward Ethan.

His attorney whispered urgently.

The judge leaned forward.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Ethan stood.

“She misunderstood.”

“She is six.”

“Exactly.”

He looked desperate.

“Children misunderstand adult conversations.”

The advocate raised another page.

“She also remembers her grandmother asking whether the doctor had written enough.”

Rebecca’s eyes met mine.

Dr. Vale.

The counselor I had never met.

The judge ordered immediate temporary shared custody.

Lily would spend four days with me.

Three days with Ethan.

Margaret could not contact Lily.

Brooke could not contact Lily.

It was not everything I wanted.

But I got my daughter back that afternoon.

She ran into my arms outside the courthouse.

“I told them Grandma hit me.”

“I know.”

“Daddy said I remembered wrong.”

I held her tighter.

“You did exactly right.”

Lily looked up.

Then she said something that changed the case again.

“Mommy, Daddy has another folder.”

“What folder?”

“The red one.”

I stared at her.

“Where?”

May you like

She whispered.

“In Grandma’s basement.”
