Chapter 16 - THE CAMERA IN THE HALL
I had forgotten the dress had a hidden pocket.
My mother had sewn it inside the lining so Lily could carry a little note at special events.
But the memory card was not my mother’s.
Lily explained.
“Uncle Thomas gave me the box.”
I stared at her.
“Thomas died when you were two.”
She shook her head.
“Not him.”
Then I understood.
She meant Ethan’s cousin, Thomas Junior.
He repaired computers.
We contacted him immediately.
Thomas Junior looked confused when Rebecca showed him the card.
“I gave Lily the box last Christmas.”
“Why?”
“She likes little treasure boxes.”
“Did you put this card inside?”
“No.”
The memory card was older than the box.
Someone had hidden it in the dress after Christmas.
We checked the files.
Security footage.
From Margaret’s house.
Her study.
Dates from eight months earlier.
Elena had apparently copied footage before she was fired but had been too frightened to keep it in her home.
She later admitted placing the memory card inside Lily’s dress during a birthday visit.
“I thought if something happened to me, Hannah might eventually find it.”
She said.
The footage showed Brooke sitting at Margaret’s desk.
Practicing my signature.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Then Margaret entered.
She placed the guardianship document in front of Brooke.
Brooke signed.
My name.
Margaret inspected it.
“No.”
She said.
“Her H curves more.”
Brooke tried again.
The third attempt satisfied her.
Then Ethan entered the room.
He looked at the page.
And said the sentence that ended every possible defense.
“That one looks real.”
No one spoke in Rebecca’s office after the video ended.
I stared at the screen.
There was no ambiguity.
No misunderstanding.
No manipulation by one family member against another.
All three had participated.
Rebecca exhaled.
“This is the case.”
The prosecutor agreed.
Brooke was arrested two days later.
Ethan’s cooperation agreement was withdrawn.
Margaret’s charges expanded.
And the guardianship forgery became the center of a broader fraud investigation.
But one question remained.
Who had removed the original document from Ethan’s office?
The answer came from the same footage.
Three weeks after the signing, Margaret placed the original inside a red folder.
Then she said to Ethan:
“Keep the copy at home.”
Ethan asked:
“And the original?”

Margaret smiled.
“Somewhere Hannah will never look.”
