Chapter 4 - THE ORDER

Rebecca opened the door only after asking the officers to show identification.
Ethan remained behind them.
He looked exhausted.
He also looked prepared.
That combination terrified me.
One officer spoke gently.
“Mrs. Mercer, we’re here regarding a temporary emergency custody order.”
My knees weakened.
Rebecca stepped beside me.
“My client has counsel.”
The officer handed her the document.
Rebecca read it.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
I whispered.
She looked at me.
“It authorizes Ethan to retain physical custody pending an emergency hearing.”
I stared at Ethan.
“You did this overnight?”
He looked past me toward the bedroom.
“Where’s Lily?”
I stepped forward.
“You planned this.”
“Hannah, don’t make it worse.”
Rebecca held out a hand.
“Do not speak directly to my client.”
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
“She took my daughter after a violent family incident.”
“Violent?”
I said.
“Your mother hit her.”
Ethan looked at the officers.
“See?”
Rebecca immediately touched my arm.
I understood.
He wanted emotion.
He wanted anger.
He wanted anything he could label uncontrolled.
I forced myself silent.
Rebecca asked to inspect the supporting affidavit.
Five minutes later, we learned exactly what Ethan had told the court.
According to him, I had screamed uncontrollably at a family gathering.
I had threatened to permanently remove Lily from everyone who loved her.
I had stolen confidential documents from his office.
I had taken Lily without telling him our location.
And I had a history of impulsive behavior that supposedly concerned multiple family members.
There was no mention of the slap.
No mention of Brooke spitting on me.
No mention of the forged signature.
The emergency judge had seen only one story.
His story.
Lily came out of the bedroom.
When she saw Ethan, she stopped.
“Daddy?”
His face softened instantly.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
She did not run to him.
She moved closer to me.
That tiny movement did not escape anyone.
Ethan crouched.
“You’re coming home with me.”
Lily shook her head.
“I want Mommy.”
The officer looked uncomfortable.
I wanted to hold her and refuse.
Rebecca whispered beside me.
“If you resist a court order, they will use it.”
My entire body screamed against what I had to do.
I knelt.
“Baby, you’re going with Daddy for a little while.”
“No.”
Her eyes filled.
“Mommy, no.”
“I am coming back for you.”
“Grandma will be there.”
The room went silent.
Lily grabbed my shirt.
“I don’t want Grandma.”
Ethan stood.
“Hannah has been poisoning her against my mother.”
Rebecca’s voice became ice.
“Officer, I want that statement noted.”
Ethan frowned.
Rebecca continued.
“The child has just expressed spontaneous fear of the adult who allegedly struck her.”
One officer wrote something down.
That was the first small crack in Ethan’s perfect story.
But it did not stop Lily from leaving.
I watched my daughter walk down the hallway holding her father’s hand.
She looked back at me three times.
The elevator doors closed.
I stood there until I could no longer see her.
Then Rebecca turned toward me.
“We have forty-eight hours.”
“For what?”
“To prove they manufactured this.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman whispered.
“Mrs. Mercer?”
“Yes?”
“My name is Elena Ruiz.”
I did not recognize it.
“I used to work for your mother-in-law.”
My heart started pounding.
May you like
Elena continued.
“I know what they did with your signature.”
