Chapter 19 - MICHAEL’S CHOICE

One year after the incident, Michael and I sat in the therapist’s office alone.
Olivia was at preschool.
Tyler was with Rachel.
Sarah lived in a small apartment across town.
Michael looked at me.
“Are you staying?”
The question had hung between us for months.
I took a breath.
“I’m not staying because you finally stood up to your mother.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“I’m not staying because you feel guilty.”
“I know.”
“I’m not staying because Olivia needs married parents.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
I looked at him.
“I’m staying because over the last year, when things got uncomfortable, you stopped disappearing.”
He started crying.
I continued.
“But staying is not the same as pretending nothing happened.”
“I understand.”
“I may bring this up again.”
“You can.”
“I may get angry.”
“I understand.”
“You may never get the version of our marriage back where I assumed you would automatically protect us.”
Michael wiped his face.
“I don’t want that version back.”
I frowned.
He continued.
“That version let me be passive.”
“I want the one where I actually have to show up.”
For the first time in a year, I smiled at him without forcing it.
“Okay.”
He reached for my hand.
I let him take it.
We did not renew vows.
We did not take a romantic vacation.
We did not pretend trauma had made our marriage stronger.
Trauma does not deserve credit for the work people do afterward.
May you like
We simply kept doing the work.
One ordinary day at a time.
