Chapter 15 - THE MARRIAGE HEARING

Sarah’s attorney dragged our marriage into the guardianship dispute.

He argued that our home was unstable because Michael and I were in counseling.

Caroline nearly laughed.

The evaluator did not.

“Seeking counseling is not evidence of instability.”

She said.

“It is evidence the adults recognize problems.”

Then Sarah’s attorney asked Michael whether I had ever struck him.

“No.”

Whether I screamed frequently.

“No.”

Whether I was emotionally unpredictable.

Michael looked toward his mother.

Then answered.

“No.”

Sarah stared at him.

The attorney produced the affidavit Sarah had wanted him to sign.

“Did you refuse this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it was false.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

That mattered more than any speech.

Michael was finally willing to disappoint her publicly.

Then the attorney asked.

“Did your wife slap your mother twice?”

“Yes.”

“Do you condone that?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“I understand why Emily reacted.”

“But I don’t believe hitting people is how our family should solve things.”

It was exactly what I would have said.

No blind defense.

No betrayal.

Truth.

After the hearing, I stopped him in the hallway.

“Thank you.”

He looked confused.

“For what?”

“For not lying for me.”

He smiled sadly.

“I’m trying to learn.”

The court approved a gradual reunification plan between Rachel and Tyler.

Sarah lost control over Tyler’s financial account.

An independent trustee replaced her immediately.

Restitution proceedings began.

Her access to Olivia remained restricted.

Sarah left the courthouse without looking at us.

Tyler watched her go.

“Is Grandma bad?”

He asked.

Michael crouched.

“No.”

I looked at him.

He corrected himself.

“Grandma has done bad things.”

Tyler frowned.

“That’s different?”

“Yes.”

Michael said.

“Because people are responsible for what they do.”

“But we don’t have to pretend they’re only one thing forever.”

Tyler looked toward Sarah’s disappearing car.

“Can I still love her?”

“Yes.”

Michael answered.

“And still not live with her?”

“Yes.”

May you like

Tyler nodded.

That answer seemed to give him permission he had needed for years.
