Chapter 13 - SARAH’S LAST PLAN

Sarah was losing Tyler.

Losing access to our house.

Losing control of his money.

So she changed strategy.

She offered Rachel a deal.

Rachel called me immediately.

“Sarah wants to give me fifty thousand dollars.”

I nearly dropped my phone.

“For what?”

“To withdraw my custody petition.”

My stomach turned.

“She put that in writing?”

“No.”

“Recorded call?”

“Yes.”

Rachel had learned.

She played it for Caroline.

Sarah’s voice came through.

Tyler needs stability.

Rachel replied.

Then why did you tell him I abandoned him?

Sarah ignored that.

I can help you start over somewhere else.

How much?

Fifty thousand.

Rachel asked.

From Tyler’s money?

Silence.

Then Sarah said.

That account is family money.

There it was.

Not Tyler’s.

Family.

Which meant Sarah’s, in her mind.

Caroline forwarded the recording to the relevant attorneys and evaluator.

Sarah’s position collapsed further.

Then she contacted Michael.

He took the call with me sitting beside him.

“Mom.”

Her voice sounded tired.

“Michael, I need you.”

He closed his eyes.

“What happened?”

“My lawyer says Rachel is trying to take Tyler.”

“She is Tyler’s mother.”

“She abandoned him.”

“She was sick.”

“She left.”

“She came back.”

Sarah’s voice sharpened.

“And what about everything I did?”

Michael looked toward me.

“What about it?”

“I raised him.”

“I paid.”

“I sacrificed.”

“You also spent his money.”

Silence.

Then Sarah cried.

Real tears, maybe.

That was the difficult part.

Manipulative people can still genuinely hurt.

Sarah continued.

“I’m going to lose everyone.”

Michael’s face tightened.

“You don’t have to lose everyone.”

Hope entered her voice.

“Then let me come home.”

“No.”

Hope vanished.

“I meant you can get help.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“I don’t need therapy.”

“I need my family.”

Michael looked exhausted.

“Those might be connected.”

Sarah hung up.

He stared at the phone.

Then he cried.

I sat beside him.

This time I took his hand.

May you like

Not because everything was fixed.

Because boundaries hurt the person setting them too.
