Chapter 1 - THE QUESTION MICHAEL ASKED

At 2:06 p.m., Michael’s name lit up my phone.
I answered before the second ring.
“Michael.”
His voice came hard and fast.
“Did the living-room camera catch it?”
For a second, I said nothing.
Not because I had not heard him.
Because that was not the question I expected.
Not, “Is Olivia okay?”
Not, “What happened?”
Not even, “Why did you hit my mother?”
“The camera?”
I repeated.
“Yes.”
His breathing sounded uneven.
“The little camera above the bookshelf.”
“Tell me it was recording.”
I looked through the bedroom door toward the living room.
I had almost forgotten about it.
Michael installed the camera three weeks earlier after claiming packages kept disappearing from the porch.
It captured the front entry and most of the living room.
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Emily.”
His voice dropped.
“Please check.”
“Michael, Olivia is bleeding.”
Silence.
Then his voice cracked.
“Is she conscious?”
“Yes.”
“Is she breathing normally?”
“Yes.”
“Did you call the pediatrician?”
“I’m taking her to urgent care.”
“Good.”
I heard movement on his side of the call.
A door slammed.
“I’m leaving the retreat.”
Then he said something stranger.
“Do not delete anything from that camera.”
“Why would I?”
“Because Mom is going to say you attacked her for no reason.”
I stared at the wall.
“How do you know?”
Michael was silent for half a second too long.
“Michael?”
“Because this isn’t the first time she’s done something and changed the story afterward.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“What are you talking about?”
“I’ll explain when I get home.”
“No.”
My voice hardened.
“You explain now.”
He exhaled.
“Tyler told me something three weeks ago.”
I looked toward the locked bedroom door.
“What?”
“He said Mom had been rough with Olivia before.”
My blood went cold.
“What does rough mean?”
“He wouldn’t explain.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I installed the camera.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“I didn’t want to accuse my mother without proof.”
I nearly dropped the phone.
“Our daughter was the proof you were waiting for?”
“No.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“It is exactly what you meant.”
Michael said my name again.
I could hear panic building in his voice.
“Emily, I made a mistake.”
I looked down at Olivia.
Her head rested against my chest.
The bleeding had slowed.
Her little bear was trapped beneath one arm.
She whispered.
“Mommy.”
I bent immediately.
“I’m right here.”
Michael heard her.
He began crying.
“Let me talk to her.”
“No.”
“Emily.”
“She needs a doctor.”
I moved toward the bedroom door.
“And I need to see that camera.”
I ended the call.
Sarah was still in the hallway.
The moment I unlocked the door, she began again.
“You finally talked to Michael?”
I walked past her.
“He told you what kind of woman he married?”
I ignored her.
I carried Olivia to the living room.
Then I opened the security application.
Sarah’s confidence lasted exactly eight seconds.
May you like
Because the video thumbnail at 1:37 p.m. showed her standing over my daughter.
And unlike Sarah, the camera had no reason to lie.
