Chapter 18 - SARAH FINALLY ADMITS IT
The restitution hearing came almost a year after Olivia was hit.
Sarah looked smaller.
Not physically.
In influence.
There was no house behind her.
No grandson beside her.
No son automatically defending her.
No money she could move without oversight.
The judge asked why she used Tyler’s settlement funds for personal expenses.
Sarah gave the same answer again.
“I was family.”
The judge waited.
“That does not answer the question.”
Sarah looked toward Tyler.
He attended only because he asked to.
Rachel sat beside him.
Sarah began crying.
“I thought the money was there to help raise him.”
“Some was.”
The judge replied.
“But you charged housing expenses for months when you were not housing him.”
Sarah looked down.
The judge continued.
“You charged medical expenses unrelated to the beneficiary.”
“Yes.”
“Travel?”
“Yes.”
“Vehicle expenses?”
“Yes.”
Finally, Sarah whispered.
“I thought after everything I had done, I deserved something.”
There it was.
The truth.
Not complicated.
Not financial confusion.
Entitlement.
Tyler’s face changed.
Sarah saw.
She turned toward him.
“That sounds terrible.”
He said nothing.
“It is terrible.”
She corrected.
“I loved you.”
Tyler whispered.
“I know.”
Sarah started crying harder.
“I still do.”
“I know.”
Then Tyler said.
“But my money wasn’t love.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Even the judge paused.
Restitution was ordered.
Some assets would be sold.
Sarah would repay what could reasonably be recovered.
The rest might take years.
Nobody cheered.
Accountability is rarely as entertaining in real life as revenge fantasies make it seem.
It is paperwork.
Loss.
