Chapter 9: Judgment Day

The courthouse was packed long before the hearing began.

News vans lined the street. Former employees, business leaders, and curious onlookers filled every available seat in the gallery. What had started as a family dispute had become one of the most talked-about corporate fraud cases in the state.

Alejandro entered wearing the same suit as the day before, but everything else had changed. The confidence that once defined him was gone.

Teresa looked even worse.

Federal investigators had spent the previous evening questioning both of them. Their bank records, emails, and phone messages had been subpoenaed overnight.

The evidence was overwhelming.

When the judge entered, the courtroom rose.

"The Court has reviewed the evidence submitted during these proceedings," he began. "This case is no longer simply about a divorce or disputed property. It concerns fraud, forgery, breach of fiduciary duty, and corporate misconduct."

He turned toward Alejandro.

"Mr. Alvarez, your claim to ownership of Carter Dynamics is dismissed with prejudice."

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

"You are further ordered to return all company property, repay unauthorized compensation and expenses, and remain subject to the ongoing federal investigation."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

He knew there would be no appeal that could erase what he had done.

The judge then looked at Teresa.

"Mrs. Alvarez, this Court finds probable cause that you knowingly participated in the creation and use of forged legal documents. The matter is hereby referred for criminal prosecution."

Teresa burst into tears.

"I was only trying to protect my son!"

The judge's expression remained unchanged.

"Protecting someone does not give you permission to deceive the law."

As deputies escorted Teresa from the courtroom, she turned toward Olivia.

"I'm sorry."

It was the first apology Olivia had ever heard from her.

But it came years too late.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Olivia.

"Do you feel like you won?"

She paused before answering.

"No."

She looked up at the clear afternoon sky.

"I recovered my company. I protected my employees. Justice was served."

She took a slow breath.

"But when the person you trusted most betrays you..."

She glanced back at the courthouse doors.

"...there are no winners."

As she walked toward her car, her phone vibrated.

It was a message from Margaret Ellis.

Your father left one final letter. He wanted you to read it only after everything was over.

Olivia smiled softly through her tears.

For the first time in months...

She was finally ready to let go.
