Chapter 5: The Blue Envelope

Olivia had not entered her late father's study since the day of his funeral.

The room remained exactly as he had left it—walls lined with leather-bound books, framed photographs from business milestones, and the faint scent of cedar that always reminded her of childhood.

She locked the door behind her.

If the anonymous message was a prank, she wanted no witnesses.

Her father's mahogany desk stood beneath the window. Every drawer had been carefully organized years ago, yet one detail caught her attention immediately.

A small brass key was missing from its usual hook.

Someone had been here.

She unlocked the bottom drawer using the spare key hidden inside a globe on the bookshelf, just as her father had taught her when she was seventeen.

Inside lay a single blue envelope.

No dust.

No yellowed edges.

Someone had placed it there recently.

Across the front, in her father's unmistakable handwriting, were five simple words.

For Olivia—If Trust Is Broken.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside were three items.

A handwritten letter.

A flash drive.

And an old photograph.

The photograph stopped her cold.

It showed her father standing beside a much younger Teresa.

Both were smiling.

Standing between them was a teenage Alejandro.

Olivia stared in disbelief.

They had known each other years before she had ever met her future husband.

The letter explained why.

Olivia, if you're reading this, someone I warned you about has finally revealed their true intentions.

Her father wrote that twenty years earlier, he had invested in a struggling construction company owned by Teresa's late husband. The business failed after repeated financial deception. Rather than pursue criminal charges, he quietly absorbed the losses to protect innocent employees.

But before walking away, Teresa made a chilling promise.

"One day, my family will take everything you've built."

At the time, her father dismissed it as bitterness.

Until fate intervened.

Years later, Alejandro unexpectedly appeared in Olivia's life.

According to the letter, her father had recognized him immediately.

He had urged Olivia to slow down the relationship, but he never explained why. He feared she would think he was judging Alejandro for his mother's mistakes.

Instead, he chose silence.

A decision he regretted until the day he died.

Olivia inserted the flash drive into her laptop.

Dozens of scanned bank records appeared.

Old court filings.

Investment contracts.

Private correspondence.

Everything supported her father's account.

Then she opened the final file.

It was a video.

Recorded just three months before her father's death.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If Teresa ever enters your home as family," he said quietly, "don't underestimate her. She never forgot what she believed I took from her. And if Alejandro knows the truth..."

He paused, his expression heavy with sorrow.

"...then marrying you was never about love."

Olivia felt the room spin.

At that exact moment, her phone rang.

It was her attorney.

"Olivia," he said urgently. "You need to come to the courthouse."

"Why?"

"Because Alejandro has just filed a lawsuit."

She closed her eyes.

"What is he asking for?"

There was a long silence.

Then the attorney answered.

"He claims that half of Carter Dynamics was built using his ideas... and he's demanding ownership of your company."

The battle had officially begun.
