Chapter 7: The Agreement

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Teresa covered her mouth the instant she realized what she had said, but it was too late. Every microphone had captured her words.

"Tell them about the agreement."

The judge raised a hand for silence.

"Counsel," he said, looking toward Olivia's attorney, "do you intend to pursue that statement?"

"We do, Your Honor."

Alejandro's attorney quickly stood.

"My client has no obligation to discuss private family matters."

Olivia's attorney smiled politely.

"This is no longer a private family matter. The statement suggests the existence of an agreement directly related to the claims before this court."

The judge nodded.

"I agree."

He turned to Alejandro.

"Mr. Alvarez, does such an agreement exist?"

Alejandro swallowed.

"No."

Teresa's eyes widened.

He had just lied under oath.

Olivia recognized the look on Teresa's face immediately. It wasn't fear for her son.

It was fear that he had made the situation worse.

Her attorney requested a brief recess.

Within twenty minutes, his legal team returned carrying a thin gray folder.

"Your Honor," he announced, "we have just received additional evidence from an anonymous source."

Alejandro stiffened.

The folder contained a notarized postnuptial agreement.

The signatures belonged to Olivia and Alejandro.

At least, they appeared to.

Olivia studied the document carefully.

Then she frowned.

"I never signed this."

A forensic document examiner stepped forward.

She had already compared the signature to dozens of authenticated samples.

Her conclusion was direct.

"The signature attributed to Ms. Olivia Carter is not genuine."

The courtroom fell silent.

The expert continued.

"It is a sophisticated forgery."

Gasps echoed through the gallery.

Alejandro looked toward his attorney, who stared back in complete disbelief.

"This document," the expert continued, "was created approximately eight months ago."

Eight months.

The same period during which Alejandro had been transferring confidential company information to Carter Dynamics' biggest competitor.

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

Olivia's attorney held up another document.

"This invoice shows payment of fifty thousand dollars to a private document specialist."

The payment had come from an account controlled by Teresa.

The judge slowly removed his glasses.

"Mrs. Alvarez," he asked, "would you like to explain why you paid someone capable of producing forged legal documents?"

Teresa remained silent.

For the first time in years, she had no clever answer.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

A woman in her early sixties walked inside carrying a worn leather briefcase.

She introduced herself calmly.

"My name is Margaret Ellis."

Every attorney in the room turned toward her.

"I was the family's estate lawyer for over twenty years."

She looked directly at Olivia.

"I believe it's time you learned what your father asked me to keep secret."

The judge granted permission for her to testify.

Margaret opened her briefcase.

Inside was a sealed envelope bearing Olivia's father's signature.

Across the front were six handwritten words.

Open only if deception wins.

Olivia's heart pounded.

Whatever was inside that envelope had been waiting for years.

And judging by the expression on Margaret's face...

It would destroy the last lie Teresa had left.
