Chapter 2: The House That Was Never His

By noon, Alejandro had convinced himself the morning had been nothing more than an elaborate misunderstanding.

Olivia was angry.

She wanted to scare him.

That had to be it.

As the company SUV rolled into the circular driveway of the mansion, his confidence slowly returned. Teresa was waiting on the front porch with a smug smile, holding a fresh bouquet of roses she had picked from the front garden.

"I told you," she said proudly. "She'll calm down. Women always do."

Alejandro forced a smile, though the knot in his stomach refused to disappear.

Then he reached for the front door.

His key didn't fit.

He frowned and tried again.

Nothing.

Teresa stepped forward impatiently.

"Give it to me."

She grabbed her own keyring and shoved the silver key into the lock.

It wouldn't turn.

Her smile faded.

"What kind of joke is this?"

Before anyone could answer, the front door opened from the inside.

A licensed locksmith packed away his tools while two private security officers stood quietly behind him.

Olivia walked into the doorway wearing a simple navy business suit, calm and composed as if she were welcoming guests to a meeting instead of removing her husband and mother-in-law from her home.

"You're changing the locks?" Alejandro demanded.

"They've already been changed."

"You can't lock me out of my own house!"

Olivia looked at him without anger.

"It has never been your house."

Teresa burst into laughter.

"Stop lying! My son bought this mansion after his promotion!"

Olivia nodded toward the security officer.

"Please."

The officer handed Teresa a certified copy of the property deed.

She glanced at the first page, then the second.

The smile disappeared from her face.

The registered owner was listed clearly in bold letters.

Olivia Grace Carter.

Purchased three years before her marriage.

No co-owner.

No mortgage.

Paid in full.

Teresa's hands began to tremble.

"That... that's impossible."

"It isn't," Olivia replied quietly. "You simply never asked."

Alejandro stared at the documents as memories rushed back.

The realtor had spoken only to Olivia.

The attorney had asked only Olivia to sign.

He had assumed it was because she preferred handling paperwork.

He had never bothered reading the documents himself.

"You let me believe it was ours," he whispered.

"I let you believe what you chose to believe."

A moving truck pulled into the driveway.

Behind it came another vehicle carrying court-authorized officers.

The lead officer stepped forward.

"Mr. Alejandro Alvarez?"

"Yes."

"You have thirty minutes to collect personal belongings only. Everything permanently attached to this property, including the vehicles, furnishings, artwork, and electronics listed in the inventory, legally belongs to Ms. Olivia Carter."

Teresa looked around the luxurious estate in disbelief.

The marble staircase.

The grand piano.

The imported furniture she had proudly shown off to friends.

Even the crystal chandelier she bragged about during family dinners.

None of it belonged to her son.

None of it ever had.

She slowly turned toward Olivia, searching for some trace of mercy.

Instead, Olivia handed her a neatly folded envelope.

Inside was a copy of the security footage from yesterday's kitchen incident.

Along with a single handwritten note.

"Respect costs nothing. Arrogance costs everything."

For the first time in years, Teresa had no words.

And for the first time since their marriage, Alejandro realized he had never truly known the woman standing across from him.
