Chapter 4: The Price of Betrayal

The conference room fell into stunned silence.

Olivia picked up the flash drive with steady hands, though her pulse raced beneath the calm expression she refused to surrender.

"Are you certain?" she asked.

The lead investigator nodded.

"We verified everything before bringing it to the Board."

He connected the drive to the large monitor.

A series of emails appeared on the screen.

Each one had been sent from an encrypted account.

The sender's name was hidden, but the attached files were unmistakable—confidential product designs, financial forecasts, client negotiations, and research plans that only a handful of executives could access.

Time stamps stretched back nearly a year.

"The metadata places the downloads on Mr. Alvarez's executive laptop," the investigator explained. "Most of them occurred late at night after other employees had left."

One board member leaned forward.

"Do we know who received them?"

The investigator clicked another folder.

A logo appeared.

NorthBridge Technologies.

The company's biggest competitor.

Several directors exchanged horrified looks.

"If they used this information..." one murmured.

"They did," Olivia answered quietly.

She suddenly understood how NorthBridge had managed to launch nearly identical products months ahead of schedule and undercut Carter Dynamics on several major contracts. She had blamed market conditions.

Instead, someone inside had been feeding them every move.

Someone she had trusted with her business... and her life.

The company's outside counsel cleared his throat.

"Federal trade secret laws are involved. This is no longer just an internal matter."

Olivia looked out the conference room window.

Far below, hundreds of employees were beginning another workday, unaware that the company they depended on had narrowly escaped disaster.

She made her decision.

"No settlements."

Several directors looked surprised.

"No private negotiations. No confidential agreement to make this disappear."

She placed the flash drive back on the table.

"Contact federal investigators. File the civil lawsuit. Cooperate completely."

The attorney nodded.

"I'll begin immediately."

Just then, Olivia's phone vibrated.

It was a message from an unknown number.

You think Alejandro acted alone.

A second message arrived before she could respond.

Ask Teresa about the blue envelope in your late father's study.

Olivia stared at the screen.

Her father had been dead for almost four years.

No one outside the family should have known about his private study.

Slowly, she looked up.

This was no longer just about corporate betrayal.

Someone was pulling on threads that reached far deeper into her family's past.

And whatever waited inside that mysterious blue envelope was about to change everything she believed about her marriage—and perhaps even about her own family.
