Chapter 6: The Court of Truth

By the time Olivia arrived at the courthouse, television cameras had already crowded the front steps.

"Ms. Carter! Did your husband really build the company?"

"Are the allegations of corporate theft true?"

"Will you settle?"

She ignored every question and walked through the courthouse doors with her legal team.

Inside, Alejandro stood confidently beside Teresa. He wore an expensive navy suit, though Olivia knew it had been rented. His smile returned the moment he saw her.

"You should have negotiated," he said quietly. "Now everything becomes public."

Olivia met his eyes without emotion.

"I have nothing to hide."

The hearing began promptly at ten.

Alejandro's attorney painted a dramatic picture.

He claimed Alejandro had sacrificed his own career to help Olivia transform a small startup into a billion-dollar corporation. He argued that Olivia had deliberately hidden company ownership during the marriage and had unfairly fired her husband after years of loyal service.

When he finished, several reporters nodded as they scribbled notes.

The story sounded convincing.

Then it was Olivia's attorney's turn.

He stood, pressed a button on the courtroom monitor, and displayed a timeline stretching across the screen.

The first date appeared.

Seven Years Before the Marriage.

Articles of incorporation.

Business licenses.

Patent registrations.

Tax filings.

Every document bore the same signature.

Olivia Grace Carter.

Next came photographs of the company's first office—a tiny warehouse with peeling paint and secondhand furniture.

Olivia was there.

So were the original four employees.

Alejandro was nowhere to be seen.

The timeline continued.

Annual revenue climbed from thousands to millions long before Olivia had ever met him.

Then came another slide.

Alejandro's employment application.

Position applied for: Regional Sales Manager.

Salary requested.

References.

Interview notes.

Finally, the hiring approval.

Signed personally by Olivia.

The courtroom grew quiet.

"So," Olivia's attorney asked calmly, "would Mr. Alvarez care to explain how he founded a company that had already existed for seven years before he joined it?"

Alejandro's confidence cracked for the first time.

His attorney quickly objected, but the judge overruled him.

Then Olivia's attorney introduced the next exhibit.

The kitchen security footage.

Every screen in the courtroom showed Teresa screaming while tearing Olivia's clothes apart.

The room fell silent.

The judge watched without interrupting.

Then came the final clip.

Alejandro stood only a few feet away.

Watching.

Saying nothing.

Doing nothing.

When the video ended, the judge removed his glasses.

"Mr. Alvarez," he said slowly, "this court is beginning to question not only your legal claims... but also your credibility."

Teresa leaned toward her son and whispered nervously,

"Tell them about the agreement."

Alejandro froze.

Olivia noticed.

"So there was an agreement," she said softly.

Teresa's face turned pale.

She realized too late that she had spoken loudly enough for the courtroom microphones to capture every word.

Across the room, Olivia's attorney smiled for the first time that day.

May you like

Because whatever "the agreement" was...

It had just become discoverable evidence.
