Chapter 9 - SARAH WHITMORE
Sarah Whitmore lived in Vermont.
She was sixty-one.
When Claire called, Sarah hung up immediately.
Claire called again.
“I have Rose Bennett’s ledger.”
Silence.
Then Sarah whispered.
“Where are you?”
They met the next morning.
Sarah looked at Ethan for a long time.
“You have Richard’s eyes.”
Ethan sat down slowly.
“You knew my father?”
“I loved him.”
The room changed.
Sarah did not apologize.
She did not need to.
The relationship happened before Richard married Eleanor.
Sarah had become pregnant.
Richard wanted to leave the Hawthorne family structure.
Eleanor’s father intervened.
Sarah was paid to disappear.
She refused.
Then her newborn son was taken from the hospital under a fraudulent adoption arrangement.

“You had a son?”
Sarah looked at him.
“Your half brother.”
Claire remembered the underground file.

“What happened to him?”
Sarah shook her head.
“I never found out.”
Rose Bennett had helped Sarah years later.
Rose found accounting records linked to a private adoption agency.
She discovered payments from Hawthorne Holdings.
That investigation led her to the larger ledger.
“Your mother wanted to expose everything.”
Sarah told Claire.
“Why didn’t she?”
“She became pregnant with you.”
Claire swallowed.
“She chose you over the fight.”
Sarah nodded.
“But she kept the evidence.”
Ethan looked at the ledger.
“What does it prove?”
Sarah turned several pages.
“It proves Eleanor’s family used shell companies to acquire property through forged debt agreements.”
Claire stared.
“That could destroy Hawthorne Holdings.”
“It could return hundreds of millions to families who were cheated.”
Then Sarah slid another document across the table.
A birth certificate.
Male child.
Mother: Sarah Whitmore.
Father: Richard Hawthorne.
Name: Daniel Whitmore.
Claire stopped breathing.
