Chapter 15 - ETHAN’S SIGNATURE
Claire did not ask Ethan until they were alone.
“What did you sign?”
Ethan looked confused.
“I don’t know.”
“Six years ago.”
He thought.
Then his face changed.
“Our prenuptial trust amendment.”
Claire stared.
“What amendment?”
“My mother said it protected family assets after we married.”
“Did you read it?”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
He hesitated.
That was enough.
Daniel and Rebecca Sloan, Claire’s newly hired attorney, obtained a copy.
The amendment contained an unusual clause.
If Claire ever made a legal claim against Hawthorne Holdings based on historical ownership, Ethan’s voting shares automatically transferred to a family protection trust.
Trustee.
Eleanor Hawthorne.
Claire stared at the document.
“She knew.”
Ethan looked ashamed.
“She knew exactly who you were before we married.”
Claire turned another page.
Her signature appeared too.
“I never signed this.”
Ethan went pale.
The pattern was painfully familiar.
Forged signatures.
Hidden clauses.
Family control.
But this forgery had happened six years earlier.
Long before Claire knew Eleanor was dangerous.
Forensic examination showed the signature had likely been traced from their marriage-license application.
Ethan sat silently for a long time.
Then he said:
“I signed the document.”
Claire looked at him.
“I didn’t know your signature was forged.”
“But you signed.”
“Yes.”
“Without asking why the clause existed.”
“Yes.”
Claire nodded.
That answer hurt.
Not because Ethan had knowingly betrayed her.
Because he had spent his whole life signing whatever his mother placed in front of him.
Eleanor did not need everyone to be evil.
She only needed them obedient.
Ethan turned over his voting shares voluntarily.
Not to Eleanor.
To an independent receiver pending trial.
It cost him control of Hawthorne Holdings.
When reporters asked why, Ethan gave one sentence.
