Chapter 12 - THE ARRANGEMENT

Eleanor had planned years ahead.

Not every detail.

But enough.

She knew Rose was young.

She knew Richard would eventually have children.

She believed the safest way to neutralize Rose’s evidence was to bind the families together.

If Rose’s daughter married a Hawthorne, exposing the Hawthornes could destroy her own husband.

Her own children.

Her own future.

Eleanor had mistaken love for leverage.

Claire listened to her mother’s recording again.

Rose had known.

And still, years later, she allowed Claire to attend the charity gala where she met Ethan.

Why?

Sarah supplied the answer.

“Rose thought Richard had stopped Eleanor.”

“She believed the danger was over.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Mom thought our meeting was real.”

“It was real for me.”

Ethan said.

Claire believed that.

Maybe that was the cruelest part.

Eleanor arranged the circumstances.

But Ethan had actually loved Claire.

And Claire had loved him.

The manipulation worked because something genuine grew inside it.

That afternoon, prosecutors charged Eleanor with evidence tampering, fraud conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment related to Richard, and several financial crimes.

The balcony incident remained difficult.

Only Maria had clearly seen the push.

Several guests saw Claire fall but not Eleanor’s hands.

Then Maria disappeared.

Her apartment was empty.

Her phone was off.

Claire felt sick.

“She threatened Maria at the gala.”

Ethan said.

“She said to be careful.”

Police searched.

No sign of her.

Two days later, a package arrived at Claire’s temporary apartment.

No return address.

Inside was Maria’s apron.

And a note.

STOP BEFORE SOMEONE FALLS FOR REAL.

Ethan called police.

Claire stared at the handwriting.

She had seen it before.

Not Eleanor’s.

Not Victor’s.

Not Maria’s.

She walked to the copy of the Hawthorne ledger.

One annotation had the same narrow capital letters.

Claire pointed at it.

“Who wrote these notes?”

Richard looked.

His face changed.

“My attorney.”

“Which attorney?”

May you like

Richard whispered.

“Victor.”
