Chapter 13 - VICTOR’S SECOND LIE
Victor had not simply helped Eleanor.
He had helped build the entire system.
For years, everyone assumed Eleanor controlled him.
The ledger suggested something else.
Victor created the shell companies.
Victor prepared false transfers.
Victor handled Richard’s medical documents.
Victor arranged Sarah’s forced adoption.
And Victor hired the mechanic who concealed Claire’s damaged brake line.
Police issued a warrant.
Victor disappeared before they reached his house.
Eleanor refused to help.
That made Claire suspicious.
“If Victor betrayed her, why protect him?”
Richard answered quietly.
“Because he knows everything.”
Ethan stared.
“Enough to destroy her?”
“Enough to destroy everyone.”
Daniel searched old corporate filings.
He found one company repeatedly used to move money offshore.
VHC Management.
Victor Hawthorne Consulting.
Tens of millions had passed through it.
Then Claire received a message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
MARIA IS SAFE.
FOR NOW.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT HER TO STAY THAT WAY.
Below was an address.
An abandoned Hawthorne warehouse.
Ethan saw the message.
“No.”
“I’m not going.”
“Good.”
Claire forwarded it to police.
Then another message appeared.
BRING THE LEDGER.
Claire typed one response.
PROVE MARIA IS ALIVE.
A photograph arrived.
Maria sat in a chair.
She looked frightened but unharmed.
She held that morning’s newspaper.
Ethan swore under his breath.
Police organized a controlled exchange.
Claire would not carry the real ledger.
She would wear a wire.
Officers would surround the building.
At midnight, Claire entered.
Victor stood beneath a hanging industrial light.
Maria was behind him.
“You came back.”
Victor said.
Claire almost laughed.
“Apparently everyone hates when I do that.”
Victor held a gun at his side.
“Give me the ledger.”
Claire raised the bag.
“Let Maria go.”
Victor smiled.
“You still think this is about Eleanor.”
Claire stared.
“Isn’t it?”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“Eleanor didn’t push you because she wanted the ledger.”
