Chapter 11 - FIRE BELOW

Police reached Hawthorne Manor before the fire spread upstairs.
But the underground records were burning.
Eleanor stood outside when Claire arrived.
Her silk coat was covered in ash.
“You always did enjoy drama.”
Claire stared at her.
“You burned evidence.”
“I burned trash.”
Ethan walked toward his mother.
“Dad is alive.”
For the first time, Eleanor lost control.
Only for one second.
But everyone saw it.
Then her face hardened.
“He is very ill.”
“He remembers everything.”
“Memory is unreliable.”
“So is an empty coffin.”
Eleanor looked at Claire.
“This is what you wanted.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“You came back and destroyed this family.”
“You pushed me off a balcony.”
“You were reaching for something that never belonged to you.”
“The truth?”
“The Hawthorne legacy.”
Claire stepped closer.
“That legacy is built on theft.”
Eleanor smiled.
“All great fortunes are built on someone losing.”
A detective standing nearby heard every word.
Eleanor was arrested for evidence destruction.
The attempted push remained under investigation.
Then firefighters recovered the red case.
It had been designed to withstand heat.
Inside were eleven cassette tapes.
One was labeled RICHARD - FINAL.
Another was labeled ROSE BENNETT.
Claire’s hands went cold.
The recording of Rose was thirty years old.
Her mother’s voice filled the police interview room.
“If anything happens to me, Eleanor Hawthorne knows why.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Rose continued.
“She told me I could take the money and leave.”
“I refused.”
“She said one day I would have a child.”
“And when I did, she would make sure that child belonged to the Hawthornes before she belonged to me.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
Neither could speak.
Then Rose said one final sentence.

“She already has a name picked out.”
“Ethan.”
