Chapter 18 - WHAT LOVE DOES NOT ERASE

Ethan moved out voluntarily.
Claire did not ask him to.
He simply packed a suitcase.
“I love you.”
He told her.
“I know.”
“That doesn’t fix anything.”
“No.”
“I should have believed you eighteen months ago.”
“Yes.”
“I should have questioned my mother years before that.”
“Yes.”
He almost smiled.
“You’re not making this easy.”
Claire looked at him.
“It wasn’t easy when you didn’t believe me.”
He nodded.
“That’s fair.”
He rented a small apartment.
Started therapy.
Resigned from Hawthorne Holdings.
And cooperated fully with the restitution process.
Claire did not promise reconciliation.
For the first time in years, she stopped making decisions based on what other people expected marriage to look like.
Richard moved into assisted living near Daniel and Sarah.
The three began building something fragile.
Not a replacement for stolen years.
Something new.
Maria became manager of a foundation funded through recovered assets.
Her first program provided legal support for domestic workers facing threats from powerful employers.
Claire returned to Hawthorne Manor once more.
Not for a gala.
Not for a confrontation.
For the auction.
Most of Eleanor’s personal collection would be sold to satisfy restitution claims.
Claire walked to the second-floor balcony.
She touched the railing.
Ethan approached behind her.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He stayed several feet away.
Claire noticed.
Boundaries.
Finally.
“I used to think surviving that fall was the moment everything changed.”
She said.
Ethan looked at her.
“What changed it?”
“Finding out how long I had been taught not to trust myself.”
May you like
She walked away from the railing.
This time, no one touched her.
