Chapter 7 - The Missing Passport
I searched every document box in the apartment.
Emma’s passport was gone.
So was her birth certificate.
Daniel claimed he had no idea where they were.
Olivia invoked her right to remain silent.
Ashley posted photographs from the airport with the caption:
Sometimes families need a fresh start.
The image was old.
But the threat was clear.
Maya requested an emergency travel restriction.
The court placed Emma on a no-departure list.
Police searched Olivia’s house.
They found the birth certificate inside a locked desk.
The passport was not there.
They found airline itineraries to Lisbon for Daniel, Olivia, Ashley, Kyle, and Emma.
The flight was scheduled for the morning after the original guardianship hearing.
My name was not on the booking.
Daniel had purchased the tickets two months earlier.
He had always planned to remove Emma once I was declared unstable.
The legal papers were meant to make the abduction appear like travel by a custodial parent.
Daniel was arrested for financial fraud and conspiracy to interfere with custody.
He posted bail.
The judge ordered electronic monitoring.
He was forbidden from approaching Emma or the airport.
That evening, I received a video call from an unknown number.
Daniel appeared inside a parked car.
“You are turning this into something it is not.”
“You bought a ticket for my daughter.”
“Our daughter.”
“Without telling me.”
“I wanted to get her away from your work obsession.”
“You locked her outside.”
“My mother made a mistake.”
“You helped plan it.”
His face tightened.
“You always choose the worst interpretation.”
“No.”
“I finally stopped choosing the best one.”
He leaned closer to the camera.
“Emma needs a father.”
“She needs safety.”
“You think money makes you safe?”
“No.”
“Evidence does.”
I ended the call.
The police traced it to a phone registered to Kyle.
Ashley’s boyfriend had helped purchase the tickets.
He requested immunity the next morning.
In exchange, he surrendered Emma’s passport.
It had been hidden inside the lining of Ashley’s suitcase.
He also provided access to a family group chat.
