Chapter 4 - The Forty-Eight-Hour Order

The emergency custody hearing began less than forty-eight hours after I returned home.
Daniel arrived in a gray suit.
Olivia wore pearls.
Ashley carried a designer bag purchased with my card.
They looked like a respectable family prepared to rescue a child from an absent mother.
Emma remained with me in a private waiting room.
Grace Holloway recommended she not appear in court.
The judge reviewed the urgent-care report first.
Then Maya played Ashley’s livestream.
Daniel’s face appeared in the glass reflection as he closed the curtain on his daughter.
His attorney claimed the balcony was enclosed and safe.
The building manager testified that the balcony had no heating.
The temperature had fallen below fifty degrees.
The door could only be opened from inside.
Olivia had locked it.
Grace summarized Emma’s statements without forcing her to testify.
The judge asked Daniel one question.
“Did you know your daughter had eaten only bread that day?”
Daniel looked toward Olivia.
“My mother handled meals.”
“That was not my question.”
“I assumed Emma had eaten.”
“You were sitting ten feet from her.”
Daniel had no answer.
The judge granted me temporary sole custody.
Daniel received no unsupervised contact.
Olivia and Ashley were prohibited from approaching Emma.
The apartment was awarded to me temporarily.
The household account was frozen pending forensic review.
Daniel stood as the judge finished.
“This is because Sarah has money.”
The judge looked at him.
“No.”
“This is because a three-year-old was locked outside while adults consumed a luxury meal and filmed her distress.”
Outside the courtroom, reporters waited.
Ashley had posted that I was using corporate power to destroy a loving family.
The livestream had already disproved her.
Still, Daniel leaned toward me in the hallway.
“You will regret humiliating my mother.”
I took one step back.
“Your mother humiliated Emma.”
He smiled without warmth.
“You do not know what she has on you.”
That evening, Maya received a sealed package.
Inside was a video of me crying in our kitchen six months earlier.
Daniel’s voice could be heard saying I was unstable.
The clip ended before the reason for my tears appeared.
I had just learned that my company might eliminate two hundred jobs.
Daniel had recorded me without my knowledge.
