Chapter 2 - Emma’s Dinner

The child-protection specialist was named Grace Holloway.

She spoke to Emma in a room filled with crayons and stuffed animals.

I watched through a window while holding a paper cup of coffee I never drank.

Grace did not ask whether Olivia was mean.

She did not tell Emma what the adults had done.

She asked simple questions.

“What happens when Mommy travels?”

“Grandma stays.”

“What do you eat?”

“Sometimes noodles.”

“What did you eat today?”

“Bread.”

“Anything else?”

Emma shook her head.

“Grandma said the seafood was for family.”

Grace paused.

“Are you family?”

Emma looked confused.

“Mommy says I am.”

That sentence broke something inside me.

Grace continued gently.

“Why were you outside?”

“I asked for chicken.”

“Grandma said greedy girls eat alone.”

“Did anyone open the door?”

“Daddy looked.”

“What did he do?”

“He told me to stop crying because Aunt Ashley was making a video.”

I remembered Ashley’s phone glowing at the table.

She had not merely been filming the food.

She had filmed Emma.

Maya obtained an emergency order preserving Ashley’s social-media accounts.

By midnight, a technician had recovered a deleted livestream.

The video began with Ashley displaying lobster tails and champagne.

Then she turned the camera toward the balcony.

Emma sat behind the glass with the bread in her hands.

Ashley laughed.

“Look at the little protester.”

Olivia’s voice came from off camera.

“She will stay there until she learns gratitude.”

Daniel appeared in the reflection.

He looked directly at Emma.

Then he closed the curtain.

More than two hundred people had watched the livestream.

Several had sent laughing reactions.

One viewer saved a copy before Ashley deleted it.

The video reached Maya before sunrise.

Daniel’s attorney called it private family discipline taken out of context.

Maya replied with the medical report.

Then she filed for temporary sole custody.

Daniel filed his own petition thirty minutes later.

He claimed I traveled excessively, placed work above motherhood, and used money to intimidate caregivers.

He asked the court to grant him exclusive use of the apartment.

He also requested control of the account that paid household expenses.

The account contained nearly six hundred thousand dollars.

I had built it as a family emergency fund.

Daniel had been studying it as an exit strategy.

When I checked the transaction history, I found recurring payments I did not recognize.

Eight thousand dollars every month to a company called Golden Home Consulting.

The company’s registered owner was Olivia.
