Chapter 5 - The Perfectly Tired Mother

Daniel’s recordings followed the same pattern.

He began filming after provoking an argument.

He removed the beginning.

He kept the moments when I cried, raised my voice, or asked to be left alone.

In one clip, I said I could not continue living like this.

He labeled it suicidal statement.

The complete smart-speaker recording showed the rest.

I cannot continue living like this with six adults spending money while no one protects Emma.

My late husband’s security system had not existed in this story.

But my company required digital security in our home office.

The system saved full audio whenever raised voices triggered a safety alert.

Daniel knew about the visible camera.

He did not know the audio copied automatically to an encrypted server.

Every edited video had an original.

Every accusation had a missing beginning.

Maya filed a motion accusing Daniel of manufacturing evidence.

His attorney withdrew the videos rather than defend them.

That did not stop the public campaign.

Anonymous accounts called me cold.

They said a mother who traveled for work could not complain about relatives making decisions.

One post included the floor number of our apartment.

Another showed Emma’s preschool entrance.

I removed her from school temporarily.

She asked whether she had done something wrong.

“No.”

“Are we moving because I took bread?”

“No.”

“Are you mad I told the doctor?”

I knelt in front of her.

“I am proud that you told the truth.”

She touched my face.

“Daddy said truth makes families break.”

“Truth shows where something was already broken.”

The police opened a financial-fraud investigation.

Samuel traced more than one million dollars through the family companies.

Some money paid Robert’s medical expenses.

Most funded vacations, vehicles, jewelry, and Ashley’s online lifestyle.

Then he found a transfer that did not fit.

One hundred eighty thousand dollars had gone to an attorney named Leonard Price.

Price specialized in guardianship and competency cases.

He had prepared a petition declaring me temporarily incapable of managing my finances.

The draft was dated three weeks before the dinner.

Daniel had planned to use my breakdown after finding Emma outside as proof that I was unstable.

The cruelty on the balcony was not only punishment.

It was bait.
