Chapter 14 - Ashley’s Followers

Ashley’s online audience collapsed after the full livestream became public.

Brands canceled contracts.

Followers demanded explanations.

She posted an apology video with perfect lighting.

She cried without naming Emma.

She said mistakes were made.

She said family conflicts had been misunderstood.

She never said:

I filmed a hungry child behind glass.

The prosecutor showed her the group chat.

Ashley changed her plea.

She agreed to testify against Daniel and Olivia.

In exchange, prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence.

During her recorded statement, she admitted the livestream had a second purpose.

Daniel wanted public evidence that I reacted violently.

Ashley planned to keep filming after I arrived.

If I grabbed the phone, she would accuse me of assault.

If I broke a plate, she would post it.

If I shouted, the guardianship evaluator would receive the clip.

They had prepared captions in advance.

My refusal to perform anger left them with nothing except their own cruelty.

Ashley also admitted Olivia had punished Emma before.

Cold showers.

Missed meals.

Hours facing a wall.

Daniel knew.

He called the methods old-fashioned but effective.

Ashley had filmed some punishments as jokes.

Police recovered the deleted clips.

In one, Emma stood in the hallway holding an empty plate.

Olivia asked whether she had learned not to interrupt adults.

Daniel walked past without stopping.

The clip was six months old.

I had been traveling in Chicago.

That night, Daniel told me Emma was already asleep.

I remembered thanking him for handling everything.

Guilt arrived like a wave.

My therapist did not let me turn it into responsibility for their choices.

“You trusted the person who promised to protect her.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now I verify.”

Trust would never feel simple again.

But I refused to teach Emma that safety required suspicion of everyone.
