Chapter 12 - The Woman at the Preschool
Emma returned to preschool after security procedures changed.
Only I, Maya, and my sister Lena could pick her up.
The school director had been replaced during the investigation.
For two weeks, everything remained calm.
Then a woman arrived wearing a staff badge.
She told Emma that Daniel had sent her.
A teacher noticed the badge color was wrong.
The woman left before security reached the lobby.
Camera footage identified her as Olivia’s cousin, Beth.
Beth had attended several family holidays.
Emma recognized her.
Police arrested Beth at her home.
Inside her car were snacks, children’s clothing, and a prepaid phone.
She claimed she only wanted to bring Emma to Daniel for a short visit.
Daniel’s jail calls showed otherwise.
He told Beth:
Once you have her, drive north.
Mother knows the house.
The false home outside the city had not been the only prepared location.
A second property existed near the border.
Olivia had rented it under Monica’s name.
The house contained travel documents, cash, and a new birth certificate application for Emma.
They planned to rename her Emily Cole.
Daniel’s contact restrictions became permanent.
The attempted abduction charge changed the custody case.
His attorney withdrew all requests for visitation.
The court appointed an independent guardian to represent Emma’s interests.
The guardian reviewed every recording and report.
Her recommendation was direct.
Daniel should have no contact until Emma reached adulthood and chose it herself.
He reacted by filing complaints against the judge, the guardian, Grace Holloway, the pediatrician, and Maya.
Each complaint repeated the same claim.
Everyone had been influenced by my money.
He could not imagine that evidence, not wealth, had turned people against him.
Emma began asking why Daniel no longer lived with us.
I used words her therapist helped prepare.
“Daddy made unsafe choices.”
“Is he sick?”
“No.”
“Can doctors fix choices?”
“People have to choose differently themselves.”
“Will he?”
“I do not know.”
She looked toward the covered balcony door.
