Chapter 8 Blackstone’s Secret

The black envelope felt heavier than it should have.
Marcus placed it inside an evidence bag before handing it to me.
"It was sitting on the interrogation table?"
I nodded.
"The moment the lights came back."
He frowned.
"No officer entered or exited that room during the outage."
Leo looked unconvinced.
"Then how did Nathan disappear?"
No one answered.
The security footage had already been reviewed three times.
At exactly 8:17 p.m., every camera inside the police station went dark.
Thirty-one seconds later, power returned.
Nathan Mercer was gone.
The handcuffs remained locked on the chair.
There were no broken windows.
No damaged doors.
No alarms.
It was as if he had simply ceased to exist.
Marcus broke the envelope's wax seal.
Inside was a single cream-colored card.
No signature.
No watermark.
Just one sentence written in elegant black ink.
Ask Richard Sinclair about Blackstone.
Leo stared at the card.
"I've never heard Grandfather mention Blackstone."
"Neither have I."
Marcus slid the card into another evidence sleeve.
"Whatever it is, Nathan wanted you to know."
Leo looked toward me.
"Or someone wanted us looking in the wrong direction."
The following morning, we drove to my grandfather's estate.
Richard Sinclair was already waiting on the veranda, a cup of tea resting beside him.
He smiled when he saw Grace sleeping in my arms.
"She's growing quickly."
I kissed my daughter's forehead.
"She smiles every morning now."
"Good."
His eyes lingered on Grace for a moment before settling on my face.
"You didn't come to discuss babies."
"No."
Leo placed the black card on the table.
Grandfather's expression changed instantly.
The warmth disappeared from his eyes.
For the first time in my life...
He looked afraid.
"Who gave you this?"
"Nathan Mercer."
Silence.
"He escaped police custody."
Grandfather closed his eyes.
"I was hoping that name would never reach this house."
I leaned forward.
"What is Blackstone?"
He remained quiet for several seconds.
Then he spoke.
"It isn't a place."
"It isn't a company."
"It's an agreement."
"An agreement between whom?" Leo asked.
Grandfather looked toward the garden.
"Forty years ago, six families controlled nearly every major industry in this state."
He slowly counted on his fingers.
"The Sinclairs."
"The Blackwoods."
"The Ashcrofts."
"The Whitmores."
"The Carlisles."
"And the Vances."
I frowned.
"The Vances weren't wealthy forty years ago."
"They weren't supposed to be."
Grandfather stood and walked toward an old bookshelf.
From a locked drawer, he removed a weathered leather journal.
"This belonged to my father."
He placed it gently on the table.
Inside were handwritten meeting notes dating back decades.
At the center of one page was a single title.
BLACKSTONE ACCORD
Leo carefully turned the pages.
"What was it?"
"A promise."
"To do what?"
Grandfather answered quietly.
"To keep power inside the six families."
I frowned.
"That sounds like a business alliance."
"It began that way."
"What happened?"
"It became something else."
He looked directly at me.
"Marriages."
"Inheritances."
"Political appointments."
"Corporate mergers."
"Every major decision was quietly negotiated."
Marcus folded his arms.
"And if someone refused?"
Grandfather's expression darkened.
"They disappeared from the table."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Grace stirred softly in my arms, completely unaware of the conversation unfolding around her.
Leo broke the silence.
"What does this have to do with Dominic?"
Grandfather sighed.
"Dominic never knew his family had once belonged to the Accord."
"And Olivia?"
"Oh..."
Grandfather's voice became almost sorrowful.
"Olivia knew everything."
At the same moment...
Olivia Vance sat alone inside her library.
Her hands trembled as she opened an old cedar box.
Inside were faded photographs.
Letters.
A wedding invitation.
And one gold medallion engraved with a black stone surrounded by six stars.
She hadn't seen it in over twenty-five years.
A maid knocked softly.
"Mrs. Vance?"
"What?"
"Someone left a package at the front gate."
Olivia frowned.
"No name?"
The maid shook her head.
Olivia opened the package.
Inside lay another black envelope.
This one contained only a photograph.
It showed Dominic as a little boy standing beside Daniel Vance.
Written across the bottom were five chilling words.
He knows the truth now.
Olivia's hands began to shake uncontrollably.
Across town...
Dominic sat inside his office, staring at the photograph Daniel had left behind.
His entire childhood suddenly felt uncertain.
Every story his mother had told him.
Every memory.
Every explanation.
How much of it had been real?
His assistant interrupted his thoughts.
"Mr. Vance?"
"What?"
"The board has arrived."
He closed his eyes.
"I'm coming."
The emergency board meeting lasted less than an hour.
When it ended...
Dominic walked out looking pale.
His chief legal officer followed him into the hallway.
"The board voted unanimously."
Dominic stopped walking.
"For what?"
"They've suspended your executive authority."
The words struck harder than any punch.
"Pending completion of the financial investigation."
"You can't do this."
"We already have."
The lawyer handed him an official resolution.
"You'll retain your shares."
"But effective immediately..."
"...you're no longer CEO of Vance Holdings."
Meanwhile...
Marcus received a call from one of his cybersecurity analysts.
"We decrypted another folder from Brooke's flash drive."
Marcus immediately opened the secure server.
A hidden directory appeared.
The folder name was simple.
SINCLAIR
Inside were hundreds of surveillance photographs.
Bank schedules.
Property records.
Travel itineraries.
Family birthdays.
Even Grace's expected delivery date.
My blood ran cold.
"They watched everything."
Marcus nodded.
"For years."
Then another document appeared.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
Leo opened it.
The room fell silent.
One sentence stood alone on the page.
Secure control of the Sinclair succession before the birth of the first legitimate heir.
I looked down at Grace.
The realization hit me like ice water.
"It wasn't me they wanted."
Leo slowly turned toward his niece.
"It was Grace."
No one spoke.
Because everyone in the room understood the implication.
If Grace was the true heir to something far greater than money...
Then every lie...
Every betrayal...
Every carefully orchestrated move...
Had been building toward the day she was born.

And somewhere, hidden behind decades of secrets...
Someone still intended to claim what belonged to her.
