Chapter 2 The Woman Behind the Smile

The morning sunlight filtered through the lace curtains of my mother's guesthouse, painting soft patterns across Grace's crib.

She had been asleep for almost an hour.

It was the longest stretch either of us had managed since leaving the hospital.

I should have been resting too.

Instead, I sat at the kitchen table staring at three photographs spread before me.

In every picture, Brooke Lawson looked nothing like the confident woman who had stood beside Dominic in my hospital room.

She looked... nervous.

The first photograph showed her leaving an upscale restaurant on the east side of the city.

The second captured a tall man stepping out behind her.

The third showed him wrapping his arms around her before placing a gentle hand over her pregnant stomach.

The gesture wasn't awkward or uncertain.

It was intimate.

Protective.

Familiar.

Leo poured himself another cup of coffee.

"Our investigator followed them for four hours."

"They stayed together the entire evening?"

He nodded.

"They weren't hiding."

I studied the man's face.

Mid-thirties.

Dark hair.

Athletic build.

Expensive watch.

Not someone who blended into the background.

"Who is he?"

Leo slid another folder across the table.

"His name is Nathan Mercer."

I frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

"You probably wouldn't have."

He opened the file.

"Nathan owns a private investment firm. Quiet money. Old family wealth. No scandals."

"So why is he meeting Brooke?"

Leo met my eyes.

"Because they've known each other for nearly five years."

Five years.

That meant Brooke had known Nathan long before she began working for Dominic.

A cold feeling settled in my chest.

Nothing about this relationship was spontaneous.

Later that afternoon, Leo arranged a meeting with the investigator.

His name was Marcus Hill.

Former federal investigator.

Calm.

Methodical.

The kind of man who noticed details everyone else ignored.

He spread several documents across the conference table.

"Ms. Sinclair," he began, "there's something unusual."

I leaned forward.

"Go on."

"Brooke didn't apply for her position at Vance Holdings."

"What do you mean?"

"She was recommended."

"By whom?"

Marcus flipped another page.

"Nathan Mercer."

Silence filled the room.

Leo looked up.

"Why would a wealthy investor recommend someone for an executive assistant position?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"That's the question."

Across town, Dominic stood before a room full of reporters.

Vance Holdings had announced its largest software acquisition to date.

Flashbulbs exploded as cameras captured every smile.

"Mr. Vance," one reporter asked, "how has fatherhood changed your perspective?"

Dominic smiled proudly.

"My son has reminded me that legacy matters."

Applause followed.

Brooke stood beside him in an elegant ivory dress, one hand resting on her stomach.

She smiled at the cameras.

No one could see the tension in her jaw.

No one noticed the message vibrating inside her purse.

Nathan:
We need to talk tonight.

She locked the screen before Dominic could glance down.

That evening, Marcus called.

"I think we've found something bigger."

Leo put the call on speaker.

"What is it?"

"We obtained security footage from the restaurant."

"And?"

"Nathan handed Brooke an envelope."

I frowned.

"What was inside?"

"We don't know."

"But after she opened it..."

Marcus paused.

"...she started crying."

That didn't fit.

Brooke wasn't a woman who cried easily.

Not from everything we'd seen.

"What happened next?" I asked.

"Nathan hugged her."

"And?"

"He said something."

"Could you hear it?"

"Not clearly."

Marcus hesitated.

"But our audio specialist isolated one sentence."

He opened a recording.

Static crackled through the speaker.

Then a man's voice.

"...once the wedding is over..."

More static.

"...everything belongs to us."

The recording ended.

Leo and I exchanged a look.

Us.

Not Dominic.

Not Brooke.

Us.

For the first time, I began to wonder whether Dominic wasn't the mastermind.

Maybe he was simply the easiest man in the room to manipulate.

A successful businessman with unlimited confidence.

The perfect target.

The next morning, I visited my grandfather.

Richard Sinclair was eighty-two years old.

Age had slowed his walk but never his mind.

He listened without interrupting as I explained everything.

When I finished, he remained silent for several moments.

Finally, he smiled.

"I warned you."

"You warned me about Dominic."

"No."

He looked toward the garden outside.

"I warned you about pride."

I frowned.

"I don't understand."

"Power makes fools believe they're choosing their own path."

He folded his hands.

"The clever ones never force the door open."

"They simply convince someone else to unlock it."

"You think Brooke planned this?"

"I think someone did."

Before leaving, my grandfather handed me a sealed envelope.

"Don't open this unless Dominic files for control of the trust."

I stared at it.

"What's inside?"

"If everything goes as I suspect..."

He smiled gently.

"...it's the only document you'll ever need."

That night, Dominic hosted a private engagement celebration inside the penthouse.

Champagne flowed.

Guests laughed.

Investors toasted his future.

Olivia raised a crystal glass.

"To the next generation of the Vance family."

Everyone applauded.

Only Brooke remained unusually quiet.

She slipped onto the balcony and dialed a number.

Nathan answered immediately.

"Did you get it?" he asked.

"Not yet."

"You promised."

"I know."

"You don't have much time."

She glanced back toward the party.

Dominic was laughing with board members.

He looked completely unaware.

Brooke lowered her voice.

"He trusts me."

Nathan replied without emotion.

"Then make sure he keeps trusting you."

She ended the call.

Inside the penthouse, the celebration continued.

Outside, Brooke rested both hands on her stomach.

For the first time since entering Dominic's life...

She looked genuinely afraid.

At nearly midnight, Marcus called again.

"I've identified the envelope Nathan gave Brooke."

My pulse quickened.

"What was inside?"

"It wasn't money."

"What then?"

Marcus inhaled slowly.

"It was a copy of Vance Holdings' shareholder registry."

Leo froze.

"That's impossible."

"No," Marcus replied.

"It's very possible."

"What does that mean?" I asked.

May you like

"It means someone isn't interested in marrying Dominic."

"They're interested in owning him."
