Chapter 4 The Woman in the Shadows

The rain began just after midnight.

It drummed against the windows of my mother's guesthouse as I stood in the kitchen, replaying Brooke's phone call in my mind.

"You're in danger."

Those three words refused to leave me alone.

Leo leaned against the counter, arms crossed.

"I don't like this."

"I know."

"It feels too convenient."

I nodded.

"So does everything that's happened since Dominic walked into that hospital room."

Marcus placed a folded city map on the table.

"If Brooke wants to meet, we choose the location."

Leo looked up.

"Public."

"With multiple exits."

"And surveillance."

Marcus circled a small downtown botanical conservatory.

"Glass walls. Security cameras. Plenty of witnesses."

I agreed immediately.

"If she really wants help, she'll come."

"And if she doesn't?"

Marcus met my eyes.

"Then we'll know it was never about talking."

The meeting was scheduled for two o'clock the following afternoon.

I left Grace with my mother.

Kissing her tiny forehead felt harder than it should have.

"I'll be back before your next bottle," I whispered.

She answered with a sleepy smile.

For a moment, I almost canceled everything.

Then I remembered the divorce papers.

The humiliation.

The look on Dominic's face when he called our daughter a burden.

No.

Running away had never been part of my story.

The conservatory smelled of fresh orchids and wet earth.

Families wandered slowly between flowering paths.

Children chased butterflies beneath the enormous glass ceiling.

An ordinary afternoon.

Exactly what Marcus had wanted.

Leo sat several tables away pretending to read a newspaper.

Marcus stood outside, speaking into a wireless earpiece.

Everything appeared calm.

Until Brooke arrived.

She wasn't wearing designer heels.

No expensive jewelry.

No perfect makeup.

She wore jeans, a gray sweater, and oversized sunglasses.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

She sat across from me without saying hello.

"I don't have much time."

"You asked for this meeting."

She removed the sunglasses.

Dark circles framed her eyes.

"They're watching me."

"Who?"

"Nathan."

"And?"

She hesitated.

"...someone above him."

I frowned.

"I thought Nathan was the one planning everything."

"So did I."

Her hands trembled around the coffee cup.

"I was wrong."

Leo subtly lowered his newspaper.

He was listening now.

Brooke leaned closer.

"You think Dominic is the villain."

"He isn't?"

"He is."

She swallowed.

"But he isn't the biggest one."

Before I could respond, Marcus's voice crackled softly through the tiny receiver hidden beneath my jacket.

"Black SUV just parked across the street."

I kept my expression calm.

Brooke noticed anyway.

"They found me."

"Who?"

She looked toward the entrance.

"I don't know which one."

I spoke quietly.

"Start from the beginning."

She nodded.

"Four years ago I met Nathan."

"He said he was an investor."

"He is."

She laughed bitterly.

"But investing isn't what he really does."

"What does he do?"

"He buys companies."

"That's legal."

"Not the way he does it."

She reached into her purse and removed a flash drive.

"I copied these before leaving."

"What are they?"

"Internal files."

"From Nathan?"

She nodded.

"And Dominic."

My heartbeat quickened.

"Why give them to me?"

"Because if I disappear..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

"...someone has to know the truth."

Before I could take the flash drive—

A porcelain coffee cup shattered across the floor.

People screamed.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

A waiter had collided with another customer.

Coffee splashed everywhere.

For three seconds...

Chaos filled the café.

When I looked back—

Brooke was gone.

Only the flash drive remained on the table.

Marcus rushed inside seconds later.

"Where is she?"

"She disappeared."

He looked toward every exit.

"Impossible."

Leo arrived beside us.

"What happened?"

"Distraction."

Marcus cursed under his breath.

"They planned it."

Security footage showed Brooke leaving through the east exit less than fifteen seconds after the coffee spilled.

Outside...

The cameras lost her.

No vehicle.

No taxi.

Nothing.

She had vanished.

That evening, Marcus examined the flash drive.

"It contains encrypted files."

Leo connected it to an isolated computer.

Folders appeared.

Financial reports.

Corporate acquisitions.

Private emails.

Hundreds of documents.

Then one folder caught my attention.

PROJECT HEIR

I looked at Leo.

"What kind of name is that?"

He opened it.

Inside were dozens of spreadsheets.

Psychological evaluations.

Executive profiles.

Family histories.

Photographs.

The first file displayed Dominic's picture.

Beneath it were handwritten notes.

High ego.

Obsessed with legacy.

Easily influenced through family pressure.

Primary weakness: desire for a male heir.

Leo slowly leaned back.

"My God..."

I whispered,

"They studied him."

Marcus nodded grimly.

"For years."

There were other names.

Wealthy CEOs.

Technology founders.

Real estate developers.

Every profile contained similar notes.

Inheritance.

Marriage.

Trust funds.

Family businesses.

It wasn't one scam.

It was a blueprint.

Then another folder opened.

This one carried a single name.

AMELIA SINCLAIR

Every sound in the room disappeared.

There were photographs of me entering charity events.

Meeting investors.

Leaving my grandfather's estate.

Even pictures from years before I met Dominic.

Someone had been watching me.

Long before my marriage.

Leo's face darkened.

"This wasn't about Dominic."

Marcus nodded.

"No."

"It was about Amelia."

I continued reading.

One sentence made my stomach turn.

Subject possesses indirect access to Sinclair Family Trust.

Another line.

Marriage to Dominic Vance increases probability of future acquisition.

Then—

Alternative strategy required if subject resists asset transfer.

I slowly closed the laptop.

"They planned this..."

"...before Dominic proposed."

Across the city...

Dominic sat alone inside his office.

The board meeting had lasted nearly six hours.

His directors demanded explanations.

Banks wanted reassurances.

Investors wanted answers.

His phone vibrated.

Private Number.

He answered impatiently.

"What?"

A calm male voice spoke.

"You've lost four point eight million dollars."

Dominic stood.

"Who is this?"

"You'll lose much more."

"What do you want?"

"You already gave us exactly what we needed."

The call ended.

For the first time since building Vance Holdings...

Dominic felt something unfamiliar.

Fear.

Real fear.

The following morning, financial news exploded.

VANCE HOLDINGS DELAYS EARNINGS REPORT.

BOARD CONFIRMS INTERNAL REVIEW.

INVESTORS QUESTION EXECUTIVE OVERSIGHT.

The stock fell another seven percent.

Commentators blamed accounting concerns.

None of them knew the real story.

Marcus entered carrying another report.

"We identified one person from the files."

"Who?"

"A woman."

He placed an old photograph on the table.

She looked elegant.

Confident.

Late fifties.

Standing beside several powerful businessmen.

"The files call her..."

He hesitated.

"...The Matriarch."

"No real name?"

"Not yet."

"What does she do?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Every company that appeared in Project Heir eventually collapsed."

Silence.

"Every marriage ended."

More silence.

"And every family's fortune changed hands."

Leo looked at me.

"This isn't revenge anymore."

"No."

"It's organized."

That night, after everyone had gone home, I stood beside Grace's crib.

She reached up and wrapped her tiny fingers around mine.

Such a small hand.

So trusting.

So innocent.

I looked down at my daughter and made a silent promise.

Whoever had manipulated Dominic...

Whoever had destroyed our family...

Whoever believed my daughter was simply collateral damage...

They had underestimated one thing.

A mother with nothing left to lose.

Just before midnight, Marcus called again.

His voice was unusually tense.

"We found Brooke."

My heart skipped.

"Where is she?"

"That's the problem."

"What happened?"

"There was a car abandoned near the harbor."

"And?"

"The vehicle belongs to Nathan Mercer."

I held my breath.

Marcus continued.

"There was blood inside."

The line fell silent.

May you like

Then he added four words that changed everything.

"But no sign of Brooke."
