Chapter 16 The Matriarch Within

The words on the back of the photograph echoed through Richard's mind long after the gunshots had faded.
The real Matriarch is already inside your family.
Marcus took the photograph without saying a word.
His eyes scanned every inch of it.
No fingerprints.
No watermark.
Just Victoria's unmistakable handwriting.
Leo broke the silence.
"If she's telling the truth..."
He looked at Richard.
"...then we've been protecting the wrong people."
Within minutes, the Sinclair estate was locked down.
Federal agents searched the surrounding woods.
Drones scanned the tree line.
K-9 units followed the sniper's trail.
Nothing.
It was as though the shooter had vanished into the night.
Marcus wasn't surprised.
"They planned the escape before they fired."
Leo folded his arms.
"The shot wasn't meant to kill Victoria."
Marcus nodded.
"It was meant to end the conversation."
Inside the library, Richard sat quietly beside the fireplace.
He hadn't spoken since Victoria disappeared back into the darkness.
I poured him a cup of tea.
He accepted it with trembling hands.
"I thought I buried her."
I looked at him.
"You buried the truth."
He nodded sadly.
"Not the child."
Marcus pinned every known Blackstone member onto the investigation board.
Margaret Ashcroft.
Helen Brooks.
Nathan Mercer.
Olivia Vance.
Daniel Vance.
Victoria Sinclair.
Then, in the center, he wrote one question.
Who is the Matriarch?
He stared at the names.
"Victoria said the Matriarch is inside the family."
Leo frowned.
"The Sinclair family?"
"She didn't specify."
Marcus looked toward Richard.
"Who had unrestricted access to every Sinclair home?"
Richard answered without hesitation.
"Family."
Marcus circled every blood relative still alive.
Richard.
Leo.
Me.
Then he stopped.
"There should be one more."
Richard slowly looked up.
"There was."
"My sister."
I frowned.
"You never told me you had a sister."
Richard smiled bitterly.
"Because everyone believed she died in childbirth."
Marcus looked at him carefully.
"Did she?"
Richard remained silent.
For several long seconds.
Finally...
"I never saw her body."
The room went completely still.
Leo blinked.
"Grandfather..."
"Are you saying your sister might still be alive?"
Richard nodded once.
"Her name was Eleanor Sinclair."
Marcus's pulse quickened.
"Eleanor..."
He quickly opened another file.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore.
A woman who had known every secret of Blackstone.
A woman whose maiden name had never been verified.
He looked at Richard.
"Could Whitmore have been a married name?"
Richard's face slowly drained of color.
"Oh my God..."
Marcus immediately ordered a complete review of Judge Eleanor Whitmore's birth records.
Thirty minutes later, his analyst called.
"We found something strange."
"What?"
"There are no original birth records."
"What about marriage records?"
"They begin when she was twenty-three."
"And before that?"
"Nothing."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"She erased herself."
Across town...
Dominic sat alone in his father's small farmhouse.
Daniel poured fresh coffee into two chipped mugs.
Neither man touched it.
Dominic finally spoke.
"My whole life..."
"...I blamed you."
Daniel looked down.
"I know."
"I hated you."
"I know."
Dominic swallowed hard.
"I never asked if any of it was true."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"You were a child."
"No."
Dominic shook his head.
"I stayed a child."
Daniel reached into an old cabinet.
He removed a wooden cigar box.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Every birthday.
Every graduation.
Every baseball game.
Pictures Dominic had never known existed.
"I wasn't absent."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"I was watching from wherever they allowed me to stand."
Dominic lowered his head.
For the first time in years...
He cried.
Not because he had lost everything.
But because he had finally found what had been stolen.
Back at Sinclair Estate...
Marcus received the DNA report from the blood found on the oak tree where the sniper's bullet had grazed Victoria.
The technician sounded confused.
"We confirmed the sample."
"And?"
"It belongs to Victoria Sinclair."
Marcus nodded.
"We expected that."
"There was another sample."
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Someone else's blood was already on the tree."
"Old blood."
"Approximately twenty-eight years old."
Silence.
Marcus slowly asked,
"Can you identify it?"
The technician answered quietly.
"It belongs to..."
"...Richard Sinclair."
Marcus rushed into the library.
"Richard."
Richard looked up.
"What is it?"
Marcus placed the report in front of him.
"Your blood was found on that tree."
Richard stared at the page.
Then...
His hands began to shake.
"I remember..."
"You remember what?"
He closed his eyes.
"The night Victoria disappeared."
Fragments returned like broken pieces of glass.
Rain.
Lightning.
Victoria crying.
Someone shouting.
Then...
A gunshot.
Richard looked down at his trembling hands.
"I wasn't trying to stop them."
Everyone stared at him.
"I was trying..."
"...to stop her."
My heart pounded.
"What are you saying?"
Richard's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Victoria wasn't kidnapped."
"She ran."
"To protect us."
No one spoke.
Because every assumption we'd made over the past fifteen chapters had just been shattered.
That evening...
Helen Brooks quietly entered a private room beneath the old cathedral.
Waiting for her sat an elderly woman with silver hair and piercing gray eyes.
Unlike Margaret...
Unlike Eleanor...
This woman radiated effortless authority.
Helen bowed her head.
"The Guardian has made contact."
The older woman smiled faintly.
"As expected."
"And Grace?"
"Still protected."
Helen hesitated.
"They're getting closer."
The woman stood and walked toward an ancient stained-glass window.
"They've only uncovered the first layer."
Helen finally asked the question she had feared for years.
"Should we eliminate Amelia?"
The older woman turned.
"No."
"Bring her to me."
"Alive."
Helen nodded.
"And if Marcus interferes?"
The woman smiled.
"He won't."
"Why?"
"Because tomorrow morning..."
"...he'll be arrested for treason."
At exactly 6:15 a.m., dozens of black SUVs surrounded the Federal Investigations Building.
Agents stepped out carrying sealed warrants.
Marcus arrived for work, coffee still in hand.
Before he reached the entrance, armed officers blocked his path.
"Marcus Hale?"
"Yes."
The lead agent unfolded a document.
"By authority of the United States Department of Justice..."
"...you are under arrest."
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"For what?"
The agent looked him directly in the eye.
"Conspiring with Blackstone."
As handcuffs closed around Marcus's wrists...
Someone across the street watched from inside a black sedan.
The elderly woman smiled.
May you like
"Now," she whispered.
"Amelia has no one left to trust."
