Chapter 18 The Sealed Envelope

The woman waited until the courtroom doors closed.
Only she, Marcus, and the federal judge remained.
She sat across from Marcus with the calm confidence of someone who had never been questioned in her life.
"I'm not here to threaten you," she said.
Marcus leaned back in his chair.
"That's refreshing."
"I'm here because time is running out."
"For who?"
She smiled faintly.
"For everyone."
Marcus studied her carefully.
She appeared to be in her late sixties.
Elegant gray suit.
Simple pearl earrings.
No visible jewelry except an antique ring bearing the familiar Blackstone seal.
"You called yourself Evelyn."
"I inherited the name."
"The title," she corrected.
Marcus remembered the prisoner's words.
The Matriarch. The Guardian. The Keeper.
Titles.
Not people.
"So you're the current Mother."
She nodded.
"And I'm the last one."
Marcus frowned.
"I don't believe that."
"You don't have to."
She slid a thin folder across the table.
"Read it."
Inside were confidential government documents.
Some were over forty years old.
Others had classification stamps Marcus had only seen once in his career.
One memo immediately caught his attention.
BLACKSTONE TERMINATION PROTOCOL
He looked up.
"What is this?"
"The beginning of the end."
Across town...
I unlocked the cedar chest again.
The wax-sealed envelope lay exactly where my grandmother had left it.
No one touched it.
No one dared.
Leo examined the handwriting.
"The ink is authentic."
Richard nodded.
"Your grandmother wrote it herself."
Marcus wasn't there to analyze it.
For the first time since this nightmare had begun...
We had to make decisions without him.
Daniel stood quietly near the window.
Dominic hadn't spoken since reading the wedding invitation.
Finally, he broke the silence.
"I think I know why they're forcing the wedding."
Everyone looked at him.
"They don't care about Brooke."
"They care about appearances."
Leo frowned.
"Explain."
Dominic took a slow breath.
"If the public believes Brooke is carrying my son..."
"...then the child becomes the legal Vance heir."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"And if Grace disappears..."
Dominic finished the thought.
"Nobody questions the inheritance."
A cold silence settled over the room.
Grace wasn't just a target.
She was an obstacle.
Meanwhile...
Victoria watched the Sinclair estate from a ridge overlooking the property.
She remained hidden among the trees.
A familiar voice spoke behind her.
"You finally came home."
She didn't turn.
"I never left."
Michael Carter stepped out of the shadows.
The former FBI agent looked older than the photographs suggested.
Years spent undercover had carved permanent caution into his face.
"They're almost ready," he said.
Victoria nodded.
"So are we."
Michael handed her a weatherproof case.
Inside was a flash drive.
"This contains everything I recovered before they declared me dead."
Victoria looked at him.
"Everything?"
He nodded.
"The original Blackstone archive."
She closed the case carefully.
"Then Amelia finally has a chance."
Back in federal custody...
Marcus finished reading the classified file.
His hands remained perfectly still.
Only his eyes betrayed his shock.
"The government knew?"
"The government knew enough," Evelyn replied.
"They never understood all of it."
Marcus closed the folder.
"This says Blackstone helped recover stolen national assets after the war."
"It did."
"It also says Blackstone eventually became independent."
"It did."
"And now?"
She sighed.
"Now it's become exactly what its founders feared."
Marcus stared at her.
"So why frame me?"
"I didn't."
"Someone did."
She nodded.
"The people trying to stop me."
Marcus frowned.
"I thought you were Blackstone."
"I am."
"But Blackstone split years ago."
She leaned forward.
"There are now two factions."
Marcus listened carefully.
"The first believes the Accord should end."
"And the second?"
"They believe Grace Sinclair should be raised inside Blackstone..."
"...as the next Mother."
Marcus's pulse quickened.
"They don't want to kill her."
"No."
"They want to control her."
At the Sinclair estate...
Richard carefully lifted the sealed envelope.
He placed it in my hands.
"This belongs to you now."
"What if opening it changes everything?"
He smiled sadly.
"It already has."
I looked at the red wax seal.
It carried the Sinclair crest.
Beneath it, my grandmother had written one final sentence.
Trust no witness standing at the altar.
Leo frowned.
"At the wedding?"
Richard nodded.
"She's warning us."
Suddenly...
Every phone inside the house buzzed at exactly the same moment.
An emergency news alert flashed across every screen.
BREAKING NEWS
BROOKE SULLIVAN FOUND ALIVE AFTER MONTHS MISSING
A live helicopter feed showed police vehicles surrounding a private maternity clinic outside the city.
Reporters shouted over one another.
Brooke was escorted outside by detectives.
She looked exhausted.
But alive.
Very much alive.
Then the cameras zoomed in.
She wasn't pregnant.
She was carrying a baby.
A little boy.
Dominic stared at the television.
His face lost all color.
"That's impossible..."
Daniel whispered,
"The baby..."
Dominic slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The baby should only be three months old."
But the child Brooke carried looked nearly a year old.
Leo looked toward Marcus's empty chair.
"If that isn't Dominic's son..."
Richard quietly finished the sentence.
"...then someone has spent a year preparing this lie."
Before anyone could speak again...
A second breaking alert interrupted the broadcast.
This one froze every person in the room.
FEDERAL COURT DISMISSES ALL CHARGES AGAINST INVESTIGATOR MARCUS HALE
Evidence determined to have been fabricated. Immediate release ordered.
I barely had time to exhale in relief—
when the front gate security alarm began screaming.
An agent's voice crackled over the intercom.
"Multiple vehicles approaching!"
Marcus's voice suddenly came over the radio.
"Don't let them open the envelope!"
"They're counting on it!"
The transmission dissolved into static.
Then...
The power went out.
Again.
Outside...
Dozens of headlights emerged from the darkness.
Black SUVs surrounded the estate from every direction.
And standing beside the lead vehicle...
Was Brooke.
Holding the little boy in her arms.
May you like
She looked directly at me and whispered words the security camera barely captured.
"Grace belongs with her brother."
