Chapter 17 The Woman Who Refused to Run

The news spread before sunrise.
Every television station carried the same headline.
FEDERAL INVESTIGATOR MARCUS HALE ARRESTED IN BLACKSTONE CONSPIRACY
His photograph appeared beside words like corruption, classified leaks, and criminal conspiracy.
I stared at the screen in disbelief.
Marcus had spent months risking his career to protect Grace.
Now the country believed he had been working for the very organization he was trying to destroy.
Leo muted the television.
"They're destroying his credibility."
Richard nodded.
"If no one believes Marcus..."
"...no one will believe the evidence he collected."
Grace slept peacefully in her bassinet, unaware that the walls around us were closing in.
Every instinct told me to run.
Leave the city.
Disappear.
Protect my daughter.
But Victoria's words echoed in my mind.
You can't outrun Blackstone.
She was right.
For nearly three decades, Blackstone had reached judges, executives, investigators, and politicians.
There was nowhere they couldn't reach.
If I kept running...
Grace would spend her life looking over her shoulder.
I looked at Leo.
"I'm done hiding."
Leo studied my face.
"You know what that means."
"I do."
"They'll come after you."
"They already are."
Richard slowly smiled.
"For the first time..."
"...you sound exactly like your grandmother."
Meanwhile...
Marcus sat alone inside a federal detention facility.
His badge.
His firearm.
Even his wedding ring had been taken.
A guard stopped outside the cell.
"You have one visitor."
Marcus frowned.
"I didn't request one."
"You didn't have to."
The heavy steel door opened.
The visitor stepped inside.
Olivia Vance.
Marcus remained seated.
"I wasn't expecting you."
"I know."
She looked older than she had only days earlier.
The confidence that once defined her had disappeared.
"I came because I owe you the truth."
Marcus folded his arms.
"I'm listening."
Olivia took a slow breath.
"I didn't frame you."
Marcus looked into her eyes.
For the first time...
He believed her.
"Then who did?"
Olivia lowered her voice.
"The woman you've been calling the Matriarch."
"Margaret?"
"No."
"Helen Brooks?"
Olivia shook her head again.
"They're only caretakers."
Marcus leaned forward.
"Then who is she?"
Olivia answered with visible fear.
"We never spoke her real name."
Silence filled the room.
Marcus frowned.
"What did you call her?"
Olivia whispered two words.
The Mother.
Back at Sinclair Estate...
Daniel Vance arrived unexpectedly.
Dominic stepped out of the passenger seat behind him.
For several seconds...
No one spoke.
The last time Dominic had stood on Sinclair property, he had thrown divorce papers onto a hospital bed and called his newborn daughter worthless.
Now...
He couldn't even meet my eyes.
"I know I don't deserve this meeting," Dominic said quietly.
"You don't," Leo answered.
Richard raised a hand.
"Let him speak."
Dominic swallowed hard.
"I believed lies."
"No," Leo replied coldly.
"You chose them."
Dominic accepted the words without arguing.
"You're right."
He looked toward Grace.
"I can't change what I did."
"But I can help stop what's coming."
I crossed my arms.
"Why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
The honesty caught me off guard.
"But Blackstone is coming for my daughter too."
I frowned.
"Brooke's baby?"
Dominic slowly nodded.
"If that child is alive..."
"...he's in even greater danger than Grace."
The room fell silent.
Because no one actually knew what had happened to Brooke.
She had vanished after Nathan's arrest.
Dead?
Alive?
Hidden?
No one knew.
Just then...
A black envelope slid beneath the front door.
Every conversation stopped.
Marcus wasn't there.
No agents had approached.
No security alarms had sounded.
Leo carefully picked it up.
Inside was a single invitation.
Heavy ivory paper.
Elegant handwriting.
Mrs. Amelia Sinclair
Your presence is requested at the marriage ceremony of Dominic Vance and Brooke Sullivan.
The wedding date was only five days away.
Dominic stared at the invitation.
"I never planned another wedding."
"I know," Richard replied.
"Someone else did."
Tucked behind the invitation was another card.
This one carried only one sentence.
Bring the sealed envelope.
My heart skipped.
"What sealed envelope?"
Richard slowly looked toward the cedar chest from the vault.
Inside...
Beneath my grandmother's letter...
Rested one final item none of us had opened.
A thick cream-colored envelope.
Sealed with dark red wax.
On the front, written in my grandmother's handwriting:
Open only when the Vance wedding begins.
The room went completely silent.
Twenty years earlier...
My grandmother had somehow predicted a wedding that hadn't even been planned.
Leo whispered,
"That's impossible."
Richard answered quietly.
"No."
"It's Blackstone."
"They planned generations ahead."
At that very moment...
Inside a private courtroom...
Marcus was escorted before a federal magistrate.
His attorney had barely begun speaking when the courtroom doors opened.
A woman in a charcoal suit entered carrying a sealed government order.
She handed it to the judge.
The judge read it.
His expression changed immediately.
Without another word...
He dismissed every person except Marcus.
The courtroom emptied.
The woman approached Marcus's table.
She extended her hand.
"My name is Evelyn."
Marcus stared at her.
"Evelyn...?"
She smiled faintly.
"Not Blackwood."
"But I've carried her title for twenty-six years."
Marcus's pulse quickened.
"The Mother."
She nodded once.
May you like
"Now..."
"...let's discuss why I need Amelia alive."
