Chapter 9 - He Used Lily

I had expected Ryan to lie about money.

I had expected him to lie about me.

I had not expected him to use our daughter.

For ten minutes, I couldn’t stop shaking.

Dad wanted to call every attorney he knew.

Margaret stopped him.

“No emotional response.”

“No threats.”

“We answer evidence with evidence.”

I looked at the affidavit.

Diane claimed that six months earlier she had watched me slap Lily during a family barbecue.

The barbecue had happened.

The slap had not.

But there had been cameras.

Charles suddenly looked up.

“My backyard system.”

Diane didn’t know Charles had installed new security cameras after a break-in nearby.

He still controlled the cloud account.

Within an hour, Charles pulled the footage.

The entire barbecue was visible.

I never touched Lily except to hug her.

Diane was not even outside during the time she claimed the abuse occurred.

She had been inside watching television.

“Keep going,” Margaret said.

We did.

The plate incident had also been partially captured.

A camera over the Caldwell driveway recorded audio from the dining room because a window had been open.

Ryan’s shout.

My response.

The sound of the plate breaking.

Lily screaming.

Then Ryan telling me to hang up on my father.

Margaret smiled for the first time all day.

“He just filed a sworn petition two hours after assaulting you.”

“And his primary witness submitted a statement contradicted by video.”

Dad asked, “Can we shut this down immediately?”

“We can do more than that.”

Margaret called a family-law attorney named Sandra Ruiz.

By evening, we had filed our response.

Medical documentation.

Photographs.

Audio.

Financial records.

Ryan’s text messages.

His fraudulent signature admissions.

And Charles’s statement that Lily was not taken from her home.

She had been removed from the scene of violence with her mother.

At 8:40, Ryan texted me.

You’re destroying Lily’s life.

I didn’t answer.

At 9:03.

Your father will get bored of you again.

At 9:15.

You’ll come crawling back when you realize he only cares about control.

At 9:47.

Tell Charles to stop talking.

That message mattered.

I showed Margaret.

“Why does he care about Charles?”

She looked toward the accounting records.

“Because Charles knows something.”

We called him.

He answered from a hotel.

Diane had refused to leave the house, so he had.

“Ryan sent Emily a message telling you to stop talking.”

Charles became silent.

Then he said, “There’s one thing I haven’t told you.”

Dad leaned toward the phone.

“What?”

“Three months ago, Ryan asked me to sign a life insurance policy.”

“On whom?”

“Me.”

Charles took a breath.

“Ten million dollars.”

“And Strategic Holdings is the beneficiary.”
