Chapter 14 - Diane’s Betrayal

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.
Ryan sat across from me wearing a gray suit.
He looked tired.
Reasonable.
Safe.
That was always one of his talents.
Diane sat behind him.
She wouldn’t look at me.
Ryan’s attorney argued that I was using my father’s wealth to alienate Lily from her father.
Sandra presented the medical report.
The audio.
The text messages.
Then the judge asked the question Ryan had been avoiding.
“Mr. Caldwell, did you throw a plate at your wife?”
His lawyer stood.
“Your Honor—”
“I asked Mr. Caldwell.”
Ryan swallowed.
“I threw it in frustration.”
“Did you throw it toward her?”
“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
The judge denied unsupervised custody.
Temporary supervised visits only.
Ryan looked at me with hatred.
Then Diane was called.
She had signed another declaration.
This one claimed I had become increasingly unstable over the last year.
Sandra asked, “Mrs. Caldwell, did you notarize a power of attorney allegedly signed by Emily?”
Diane’s lawyer objected.
The judge allowed the question.
Diane whispered, “Yes.”
“Was Emily present?”
“No.”
“Did you watch her sign it?”
“No.”
“Then why did you notarize it?”
Diane stared at Ryan.
And there it was.
The first fracture.
“Because my son told me she had signed it earlier.”
Ryan’s eyes narrowed.
Sandra asked, “Is that legally sufficient?”
“No.”
“Did you know that?”
Diane began crying.
“Yes.”
Ryan whispered, “Mom.”
Sandra continued.
“Did you also sign documents related to Caldwell Strategic Holdings?”
“Yes.”
“Did Emily authorize you to use her inheritance?”
“I thought Ryan had authorization.”
“You thought?”
Diane’s composure broke.
“He said Emily would never know.”
The courtroom went silent.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Diane seemed to realize what she had said.
Sandra let the silence remain.
After the hearing, Ryan cornered his mother near the elevator.
“You idiot.”
I heard it.
So did Charles.
He stepped between them.
“Don’t speak to her like that.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Now you defend her?”
“You didn’t defend your company.”
“You didn’t defend your own wife.”
“You didn’t even know what was happening under your roof.”
Charles flinched.
Ryan walked away.
Diane started sobbing.
Then she grabbed my arm.
“Emily.”
Rebecca immediately moved forward.
I raised my hand.
“It’s okay.”
Diane looked terrified.
“There’s something Ryan doesn’t know I kept.”
“What?”
“A copy of the Meridian agreement.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“Why would you keep it?”
Diane’s face collapsed.
“Because I stopped trusting my own son.”
She opened her purse.
Instead of a contract, she removed a storage-unit key.
“Everything is there.”
Then a voice behind us said, “No, Mom.”
May you like
Ryan stood at the end of the hallway.
And he had heard every word.
