Chapter 2 - The Signature

I forgot about my shoulder.
I forgot about Diane.
I forgot about the broken plate scattered near my shoes.
“What loan guarantee?”
My father replied carefully.
“Four point eight million dollars.”
Charles made a choking sound.
Diane grabbed the edge of the table.
Ryan stared at the floor.
That was the only answer I needed.
I looked at him.
“You forged my signature?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Dad continued.
“The document was submitted fourteen months ago.”
“It identifies Emily as personal guarantor based on assets inherited from her grandmother.”
I felt cold despite the heat coming from the kitchen.
My grandmother had left me investments, farmland outside Fort Worth, and a minority interest in several family partnerships.
Ryan knew about the inheritance.
He did not control it.
At least, I had believed he didn’t.
Charles stood slowly.
“Ryan.”
“What did you do?”
Ryan turned on his father.
“I saved the company.”
“You were losing contracts.”
“You had payroll due.”
“You begged me to fix it.”
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“I never told you to commit fraud.”
Diane immediately stepped beside her son.
“Everyone needs to calm down.”
“Ryan was under pressure.”
I looked at her.
“He stole forty thousand dollars from me and forged my name for millions.”
“He threw a plate at my face.”
“And you’re worried about his pressure?”
She lifted her chin.
“Marriage requires forgiveness.”
“So does family.”
Lily spoke from behind me.
“Grandma, Dad hurt Mom.”
Diane’s expression hardened.
“Lily, adults are talking.”
My daughter’s hand tightened around mine.
Before I could respond, headlights swept across the front windows.
Ryan moved toward the foyer.
Dad said through the phone, “Emily, stay where you are.”
Three black SUVs stopped outside.
Two men and one woman in dark business clothes walked toward the door.
Charles looked through the window.
“That’s Hawthorne security.”
Ryan cursed.
Then something unexpected happened.
He ran.
Not toward me.
Not toward the front door.
Toward his father’s study.
Charles shouted after him.
“What are you doing?”
Ryan slammed the study door.
A second later, I heard a drawer crash open.
Then another.
Dad’s voice came sharply through the phone.
“Emily, what room is he in?”
“The study.”
“Get away from that hallway.”
I pulled Lily toward the stairs.
The front door opened.
The woman leading Dad’s security team entered.
“Mrs. Caldwell?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Rebecca Shaw.”
“Your father sent us.”
From inside the study came the sound of glass breaking.
Charles rushed forward.
Rebecca blocked him.
“Sir, please stay back.”
Ryan shouted from behind the closed door.
“You’re not taking this from me!”
I looked at Charles.
“What is he talking about?”
Charles looked genuinely confused.
Then the study door opened.
Ryan stepped out holding a red leather folder.
For the first time that evening, my father raised his voice.
“Rebecca, secure that folder.”
Ryan’s eyes widened.
He turned toward the back door.
Rebecca moved faster.
She caught his wrist before he took two steps.
The folder fell open.
Documents spilled across the floor.
One page landed near my feet.
At the bottom was my name.
Above it was a transfer authorization.

And beside my forged signature was another signature I recognized immediately.
Diane Caldwell.
