Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

The pills were tested.

They were not poison.

They were a different heart medication with a dramatically different dosage.

Enough to create serious risk if Charles took them believing they were his normal pills.

Charles remembered Ryan bringing him a bottle after the pharmacy transfer.

He had taken two doses.

Both times he became dizzy.

Afterward, he stopped using the bottle and returned to his previous prescription.

That decision may have saved him.

Ryan’s legal problems changed overnight.

The financial investigation expanded.

So did the criminal one.

Dad wanted me protected around the clock.

I agreed for Lily’s sake.

But I refused to hide.

For the first time since this started, we moved forward publicly.

Charles called an emergency meeting with Caldwell Manufacturing’s senior managers.

I attended beside him.

Three hundred employees watched through a company livestream.

Charles spoke first.

“My son attempted to strip this company of assets.”

“I failed to see it.”

“That failure belongs to me.”

Then he stepped aside.

I explained that my trust would finance operations temporarily while legal ownership of the patents was resolved.

Nobody applauded.

They were too scared.

So I told them the only thing that mattered.

“Payroll will continue.”

“You will not lose this company because someone decided your jobs were useful collateral in a private scheme.”

That got a reaction.

People began clapping.

Charles looked at me as if I had given him something he didn’t deserve.

Maybe I had.

Then Dad announced Hawthorne Capital would suspend negotiations to acquire Caldwell Manufacturing.

Ryan’s media story had claimed Dad was engineering a hostile takeover.

We removed that weapon.

Instead, the company would remain independent while the fraud was litigated.

The following morning, a judge froze Strategic Holdings’ major assets.

Meridian received a subpoena.

Aster Consulting’s accounts were restricted.

Eric Stanton’s license came under review.

And Ryan’s personal accounts were temporarily frozen to preserve disputed funds.

At noon, Natalie finally walked into a Dallas police station with her lawyer.

She surrendered the original Meridian communications she had kept on a hidden cloud account.

Meridian had lied.

The acquisition was real.

Their executives knew Caldwell’s assets had been transferred under suspicious circumstances.

Natalie agreed to cooperate.

She admitted her role.

She also provided recorded calls with Ryan.

One call changed everything.

Ryan said, “Once September hits, Charles is finished.”

Natalie asked, “And Emily?”

Ryan laughed.

“She’ll come back.”

“She always comes back.”

“Women like Emily don’t leave.”

“They just threaten to.”

I listened without blinking.

Dad watched me.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

And I meant it.

Because hearing Ryan say those words didn’t make me miss him.

It made me understand him.

He hadn’t believed I loved him.

He believed I was trained to forgive him.

That afternoon, I filed my own divorce petition.

And this time, I asked for something Ryan never expected.

Full custody.
