Chapter 16 - The Old Clue

Unit 418 was at a different storage facility.

Law enforcement obtained access before we touched anything.

Inside were the missing boxes from Diane’s unit.

The Meridian agreement.

Computers.

Financial files.

And something Ryan had never intended us to find.

His old laptop.

The same one he used before our marriage.

Forensic technicians recovered deleted emails.

One thread began eight years earlier.

Two years before I met Ryan.

Sender: Natalie.

Subject: EMILY.

Ryan wrote.

Is she serious about controlling her grandmother’s interest?

Natalie replied.

Very.

She’ll inherit more than people think.

Another message.

Does she date anyone?

Natalie answered.

Not seriously.

Then.

Can you introduce us naturally?

I stared at Natalie’s words.

Maybe at the art fundraiser next year.

She hates being set up.

Dad read the exchange silently.

I didn’t cry this time.

The truth had gone beyond heartbreak.

It had become architecture.

Ryan had studied me.

Waited.

Approached me intentionally.

Then created a romance designed to look accidental.

The forensic team found another email from six months before our wedding.

Ryan to Eric.

Once married, inheritance stays separate unless she commingles.

Need her to move distributions into joint accounts.

Eric replied.

Slowly.

Make it look voluntary.

I remembered Ryan suggesting we simplify our finances.

He called it trust.

He called separate accounts a sign I expected the marriage to fail.

Every argument had been calculated.

But the most important evidence came from an audio file.

Ryan apparently recorded business notes on his laptop.

One file was dated three weeks earlier.

Ryan’s voice.

“If Meridian backs out, pressure Charles until he signs the insurance.”

Then Eric.

“He won’t.”

Ryan replied.

“Then we use the health issue.”

Charles looked confused.

“What health issue?”

The file continued.

Eric asked, “Does Diane know?”

Ryan answered.

“She knows enough.”

Diane covered her mouth.

“I don’t know what he means.”

Charles suddenly stood.

His face had gone pale.

Dad caught his arm.

“What’s wrong?”

Charles pressed one hand to his chest.

“Medication.”

“What medication?”

“My heart pills.”

“I changed prescriptions last month because the old one stopped working.”

Diane whispered, “Ryan picked them up.”

The room froze.

Charles’s doctor was contacted immediately.

The pharmacy records showed something strange.

The prescription had been transferred.

Then filled twice.

Once correctly.

Once at another pharmacy across town.

The second pickup had been made by Ryan.

Charles whispered, “Why would he need my medication?”

No one answered.

Then the investigator opened another file from Unit 418.

Inside was an envelope containing several tablets.

The label bore Charles Caldwell’s name.

But the pills inside did not match his prescription.
