Chapter 6 - Ryan’s Offer

Ryan called fourteen times that morning.

I didn’t answer.

At noon, he texted.

We need to talk without your father manipulating you.

Then another message.

Think about Lily.

Then another.

Mom made mistakes, but she loves you.

Finally.

I can fix everything if you come home.

Dad read the last message over my shoulder.

“He doesn’t think he has a financial problem.”

“He thinks he has an Emily problem.”

I hated how accurate that sounded.

Margaret suggested we preserve every message.

I did.

At 2:30, Ryan stopped calling.

At 3:15, someone knocked on the suite door.

Rebecca checked the camera.

“It’s Charles Caldwell.”

Dad’s expression hardened.

“Does he have anyone with him?”

“No.”

I told Rebecca to let him in.

Charles entered looking twenty years older than he had the night before.

He carried no briefcase.

No lawyer.

Just an envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“I owe you an apology.”

I didn’t speak.

“I knew Ryan had taken money from your joint savings.”

“I didn’t know it was inheritance.”

“You shouldn’t have needed that distinction.”

He nodded.

“You’re right.”

He looked toward Dad.

“I also knew Ryan had been pushing aggressively to sell the company.”

“I thought he was desperate.”

“I didn’t know he was stripping it.”

Dad folded his hands.

“What’s in the envelope?”

Charles looked at me.

“Proof.”

Inside were printouts from Caldwell Manufacturing’s accounting system.

Ryan had approved payments to Strategic Holdings.

Millions of dollars over eighteen months.

One transfer stopped me.

Eight hundred seventy-five thousand dollars.

Recipient: Aster Consulting.

“What is Aster Consulting?”

Charles shook his head.

“I thought it was a vendor.”

“It has no contract.”

“No employees I can find.”

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

Margaret typed the name into her laptop.

A moment later, her expression changed.

“What?”

She rotated the screen.

Aster Consulting had been registered in Nevada.

Its manager was an attorney named Eric Stanton.

I recognized the name.

Ryan’s best friend from college.

The man who had been best man at our wedding.

My phone rang.

Ryan.

This time, Dad said, “Answer.”

I put it on speaker.

Ryan spoke immediately.

“Emily, I’m outside.”

Rebecca moved toward the window.

Dad remained seated.

“Why?”

Ryan hesitated after hearing him.

“I came to make my wife an offer.”

I almost laughed.

“What offer?”

“Come downstairs.”

“No.”

“Emily, this is between us.”

“So was my inheritance.”

Silence.

Then Ryan changed his tone.

“Fine.”

“I’ll say it here.”

“Sign a statement saying the transfers were authorized.”

“In return, I’ll agree to a clean divorce.”

“Joint custody.”

“No claim against your inheritance.”

“And I’ll repay the forty thousand.”

Charles stared at the phone in disbelief.

Dad didn’t move.

I asked, “And the four point eight million dollar guarantee?”

Another pause.

Ryan answered quietly.

“That disappears too.”

Margaret began writing.

I said, “You just admitted it wasn’t valid.”

Ryan realized his mistake.

“Emily—”

I ended the call.

Thirty seconds later, Rebecca’s phone buzzed.

She read the security message.

Then she looked at me.

“Ryan just left the hotel.”

“With someone.”

“Who?”

Rebecca turned her phone around.

The parking camera showed Ryan entering a black Mercedes.

The driver was Eric Stanton.

And in the passenger seat sat a woman I knew.

My cousin, Natalie Hawthorne.
