CHAPTER 8 — THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH

For the first time in months, Dominic Hale was afraid of the right person.
Not Evelyn.
Not the board.
Not the public.
Victor Lang.
Because Dominic finally understood the role he had played.
He had believed he was the mastermind of his own future.
He thought he was escaping a marriage that made him feel invisible.
He thought he was finally taking control.
But the truth was humiliating.
He had never been in control.
He had simply been useful.
Victor had seen his insecurity.
He had seen his jealousy.
He had seen the small cracks in his marriage and pushed until everything broke.
And Dominic had willingly handed him the weapon.
That night, Dominic sat alone in his apartment.
The city lights outside the window reminded him of the Sterling Crown.
The hotel.
The lobby.
The five-dollar bill.
Evelyn standing there while another woman insulted her.
He remembered the moment clearly.
The moment where he could have stopped everything.
One sentence.
One apology.
One act of loyalty.
He could have said:
"Don't speak to my wife that way."
But he didn't.
He chose silence.
And that silence changed everything.
At midnight, Dominic opened his laptop.
He searched through old files.
Documents.
Emails.
Messages.
Evidence of conversations he had ignored.
Things he had convinced himself were harmless.
Now they looked different.
Because guilt had a way of changing the meaning of memories.
A message from Victor appeared.
"Remember our agreement. Once Whitmore loses control, you get your position."
Dominic stared at the words.
His stomach turned.
He had forgotten.
Or maybe he had chosen to forget.
Because forgetting made him feel less guilty.
He closed his eyes.
Then he made a decision.
The next morning, Evelyn was preparing for a meeting with investors when Carter called.
"Madam Chair."
"Yes?"
"Mr. Hale is here."
She became still.
"Did he request a meeting?"
"No."
A pause.
"He said he needs to speak with you immediately."
Evelyn looked at Richard.
Richard understood.
"You think he's here about Victor?"
"I don't know."
"Do you want to see him?"
Evelyn looked toward the window.
For months, she had wanted answers.
Now they were walking toward her.
"Yes."
Dominic entered the office.
But this time, he looked different.
No expensive suit.
No confidence.
No performance.
Just a tired man carrying the weight of his own decisions.
"Evelyn."
She didn't invite him to sit.
"What do you want?"
Dominic looked down.
"I need to tell you everything."
She remained silent.
"Not because I want forgiveness."
A pause.
"Because you deserve the truth."
Those words surprised her.
Not because they were meaningful.
Because they were the first honest words he had spoken in a long time.
"I met Victor almost two years ago."
Evelyn listened.
"He approached me after I complained about feeling ignored at the company."
Her expression changed slightly.
Ignored.
That was the word.
The excuse.
"The company was your dream," Dominic continued.
"And I started believing that meant there was no room for me."
Evelyn looked at him.
"There was always room for you."
Dominic swallowed.
"I know that now."
A painful silence followed.
"I was jealous of you."
The confession hung between them.
"I hated that people respected you more than me."
Evelyn said nothing.
"Victor knew exactly what to say."
Dominic continued.
"He told me I deserved recognition. He told me I should have more control."
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"And I believed him."
Richard stood quietly in the corner.
Listening.
Watching.
Because this wasn't just a confession.
It was evidence.
Dominic continued.
"The affair with Vanessa..."
He stopped.
His voice became quieter.
"That wasn't planned."
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
"Does that make it better?"
"No."
Immediately.
"No, it doesn't."
He looked at her.
"I hurt you."
A pause.
"I humiliated you."
Another pause.
"And I blamed you for my own failures."
Evelyn looked away.
Because hearing him admit it should have brought satisfaction.
Instead, it brought sadness.
Because she remembered when she loved him.
"Victor wanted me to divorce you publicly."
Dominic continued.
"He wanted me to make you look unstable."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Why?"
"Because investors would panic."
He looked at Richard.
"He wanted people to believe Whitmore Holdings needed new leadership."
Richard nodded slowly.
"And Dominic Hale was supposed to be that leader."
Dominic closed his eyes.
"Yes."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn asked:
"Why tell me now?"
Dominic looked at her.
"Because Victor threatened me."
She nodded slightly.
"Of course."
"I know how it sounds."
"It sounds like you're protecting yourself."
Dominic accepted the statement.
"Maybe part of me is."
He took a breath.
"But another part..."
His voice broke slightly.
"Another part finally realized I was helping someone destroy the woman who spent twenty years believing in me."
Evelyn walked toward the desk.
She picked up the five-dollar bill.
Dominic looked at it.
"I remember that night."
"So do I."
"I should have defended you."
"Yes."
He looked down.
"I was ashamed."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You weren't ashamed of Vanessa."
Dominic didn't move.
"You were ashamed because you thought I reminded people of the person you were afraid to be."
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
After Dominic left, Richard looked at Evelyn.
"Do you believe him?"
She stared at the closed door.
"Yes."
Richard seemed surprised.
"Why?"
"Because for the first time, he didn't try to make himself the victim."
She looked at the documents.
"But believing him doesn't erase what he did."
That afternoon, Evelyn called an emergency meeting.
Every senior executive attended.
The room was tense.
She placed the evidence on the table.
"Victor Lang is preparing an attack against this company."
The executives exchanged worried looks.
"But he made one mistake."
Evelyn looked around.
"He underestimated the people he betrayed."
Across town, Victor Lang smiled as he watched the news.
He believed everything was going according to plan.
He believed Dominic was broken.
He believed Evelyn was vulnerable.
He believed Whitmore Holdings was finally within reach.
Then his assistant entered.
"Sir."
"What?"
"We have a problem."
Victor looked up.
"What problem?"
The assistant hesitated.
"Dominic Hale has turned against us."
May you like
For the first time...
Victor's smile disappeared.
