CHAPTER 7 — THE ENEMY SITTING INSIDE WHITMORE HOLDINGS

The words stayed in Evelyn's mind long after she left the café.

Someone inside your company.

For twenty years, Evelyn Whitmore had built her empire by trusting people.

Not blindly.

Never blindly.

She studied people carefully.

She watched how they treated those who couldn't help them.

She noticed how they acted when nobody was watching.

But the truth was...

Even the best leaders could miss a betrayal when it came from someone standing close enough.

The moment Evelyn returned to her office, she called Richard Alder.

"Come to my office."

Ten minutes later, Richard entered carrying his tablet.

One look at Evelyn's face told him something had changed.

"What happened?"

Evelyn closed the office door.

"Vanessa Blake contacted me."

Richard raised an eyebrow.

"Vanessa?"

"She claims Dominic had an accomplice inside Whitmore Holdings."

Richard became serious.

"Did she provide a name?"

"No."

"Do you believe her?"

Evelyn looked toward the city.

"Three days ago, I would have said no."

A pause.

"Today, I'm not so certain."

Richard placed the tablet on the desk.

"Then we investigate."

Evelyn nodded.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Because whoever had helped Dominic was not just a thief.

They were someone who understood the company.

Someone who knew the systems.

Someone who knew where the weaknesses were.

That afternoon, Richard began a confidential audit.

Only three people knew.

Evelyn.

Richard.

And Emily, Evelyn's executive assistant.

Everyone else continued working normally.

The best investigations happened when the person being hunted didn't know they were being watched.

Meanwhile, Dominic sat inside a small private office he rented after losing his position.

It was a pathetic replacement for the corner office he once had.

A single desk.

A cheap coffee machine.

No assistants.

No luxury.

No power.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

A name appeared.

Victor Lang.

Dominic hesitated.

Then answered.

"You shouldn't call me."

The voice on the other end laughed.

"You sound nervous."

"I'm done."

A pause.

"Done?"

"Yes."

Dominic looked around the empty room.

"I lost everything."

Victor laughed again.

"You lost because you got emotional."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Don't talk to me like that."

"Why not?"

The voice became colder.

"You wanted the company."

Silence.

"You wanted Evelyn's empire."

Dominic gripped the phone.

"That was before."

"Before what?"

"Before I realized what I was doing."

Victor laughed.

"Don't tell me you suddenly found your conscience."

Dominic said nothing.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

Slowly.

Painfully.

He had finally realized the damage he caused.

Victor continued.

"You still owe me."

Dominic's face changed.

"I don't owe you anything."

"You might want to rethink that."

A pause.

"Because if I go down, you go down with me."

The call ended.

Dominic stared at the phone.

For the first time...

He wasn't afraid of Evelyn.

He was afraid of the person behind the plan.

At Whitmore Holdings, the investigation revealed something unusual.

Richard walked into Evelyn's office two days later.

"We found something."

Evelyn looked up.

"Who?"

Richard hesitated.

"Daniel Mercer."

The name was familiar.

"Chief Financial Officer?"

Richard nodded.

Daniel had worked with Evelyn for eleven years.

He had been there during expansions.

During acquisitions.

During difficult negotiations.

He had been one of the few people Evelyn trusted completely.

"How much?"

Richard opened the report.

"Nearly eight hundred thousand dollars moved through accounts connected to him."

Evelyn stared at the documents.

Daniel.

The man who had sat beside her in countless meetings.

The man who once told her:

"You don't build a company alone. You build it with people you trust."

She remembered those words.

Now they felt different.

Daniel arrived at the office the following morning.

He walked confidently.

Too confidently.

He entered Evelyn's office with a smile.

"Good morning."

Evelyn studied him.

"Daniel."

"Is something wrong?"

She gestured toward the chair.

"Sit."

He did.

Richard placed a folder on the table.

Daniel's eyes moved toward it.

Just for a second.

But Evelyn noticed.

Fear.

Recognition.

Guilt.

All in one moment.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

"How long?"

His expression changed.

"What are you talking about?"

"Don't insult me."

Silence.

Richard opened the folder.

"We traced the transfers."

Daniel leaned back.

"I don't know what you think you found."

Evelyn looked at him.

"That's disappointing."

"What?"

"After eleven years, I expected you to at least have the courage to tell the truth."

Daniel's confidence began to disappear.

Finally, he sighed.

"You don't understand."

Those words again.

Evelyn almost laughed.

Everyone who betrayed her used the same sentence.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Daniel looked down.

"I was tired."

"Tired?"

"Of watching you control everything."

Evelyn stared.

"You mean lead?"

His jaw tightened.

"You always got the credit."

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"I took responsibility."

Daniel looked away.

"You had everything."

"No."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"I built everything."

Daniel eventually admitted the truth.

Victor Lang, a former business partner, had approached him.

The plan was simple.

Create financial instability.

Remove Evelyn from leadership.

Convince investors that Whitmore Holdings needed new management.

And place Dominic as the public face of the transition.

Dominic wasn't the mastermind.

He was the replacement.

The puppet.

The man who thought he was becoming powerful.

That evening, Evelyn stood alone in her office.

Two betrayals.

Two people she trusted.

Two people who believed kindness was weakness.

Emily entered quietly.

"Are you okay?"

Evelyn looked at the city.

"No."

The answer surprised Emily.

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"But being okay isn't the same as being defeated."

She turned.

"Prepare a full legal response."

Emily nodded.

"And Dominic?"

Evelyn paused.

For a moment, she remembered the man from the wedding photo.

Then she remembered the hotel lobby.

"Dominic was a betrayal."

Her eyes became determined.

"But Victor Lang is a threat."

Across the city, Dominic received another message.

This time, it wasn't from Victor.

It was from an unknown number.

"If you want to save yourself, tell Evelyn the truth before Victor does."

Dominic stared at the screen.

His heart raced.

Because he finally understood something.

The game had never been between him and Evelyn.

It had always been bigger.

And now...

The person who started everything was coming for them both.
