CHAPTER 12 — THE PERSON EVELYN TRUSTED MOST WAS THE ONE WHO BETRAYED HER

Evelyn remained standing outside the original Sterling Crown for several minutes after Richard's call ended.

The city continued moving around her.

Cars passed.

People walked through the streets.

Lights flashed across the buildings.

But everything felt strangely quiet.

Because there was one sentence she couldn't forget.

Someone you trust more than anyone.

She had spent months learning painful lessons about betrayal.

Dominic taught her that love could hide selfishness.

Daniel taught her that loyalty could hide greed.

Victor taught her that ambition could hide cruelty.

But this was different.

This person was not someone who had recently entered her life.

This person was someone who had been there from the beginning.

The next morning, Evelyn arrived at headquarters before sunrise.

Richard was already waiting.

He looked exhausted.

"You found them?"

Evelyn asked.

Richard nodded.

"I did."

He placed a folder on the table.

But he didn't open it.

"Before you see this, I want you to know something."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What?"

"The evidence is clear."

A pause.

"But I still had trouble believing it."

That sentence made Evelyn uneasy.

Because Richard had worked with her for twenty years.

He knew her better than almost anyone.

"Who?"

Richard slowly opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Evelyn stared.

Her face changed.

"No."

Richard said nothing.

Because he knew.

The person in the photograph was the last person she expected.

Emily Carter.

Her assistant.

Her closest confidante.

The woman who had stood beside her through every crisis.

For several seconds, Evelyn couldn't speak.

Emily?

The woman who knew her schedule.

Her fears.

Her habits.

Her private thoughts.

The woman who had brought her coffee after twelve-hour negotiations.

The woman who had comforted her after Dominic's betrayal.

Richard watched her carefully.

"I know what you're thinking."

Evelyn looked up.

"Do you?"

"You're wondering how you missed it."

She looked away.

Because he was right.

The investigation revealed everything.

Emily had not started as Victor's ally.

That was the most painful part.

She had been loyal.

For years.

But slowly, Victor had manipulated her.

He had found her weakness.

Her resentment.

Her feeling that Evelyn's success made her invisible.

The same weakness he had used with Dominic.

The same weakness he had used with Daniel.

Victor didn't create betrayal.

He discovered where people were already vulnerable.

"What did she give him?"

Evelyn asked.

Richard answered quietly.

"Internal schedules."

A pause.

"Private meeting information."

Another pause.

"Early financial projections."

Evelyn closed the folder.

"How much damage?"

"Potentially significant."

"But not permanent?"

"No."

Richard looked at her.

"Because you already prepared."

A small smile appeared on Evelyn's face.

Even after everything...

Her company was still standing.

Emily arrived at the office at 9:00 AM.

She walked in carrying Evelyn's coffee.

The same routine she had followed for years.

"Good morning."

Evelyn looked at her.

For a moment, she saw the old Emily.

The loyal assistant.

The friend.

Then she remembered the documents.

"Sit down."

Emily stopped.

Something in Evelyn's voice told her everything.

She slowly placed the coffee on the desk.

"What happened?"

Evelyn pushed the folder forward.

Emily looked down.

The color disappeared from her face.

"I can explain."

Evelyn said nothing.

"Please."

Still nothing.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I never wanted this."

Evelyn finally spoke.

"Then why?"

The question was quiet.

Not angry.

That made it worse.

Emily looked down.

"I was tired."

Evelyn almost smiled sadly.

Another person.

Another excuse.

"Tired of what?"

Emily swallowed.

"Of watching everyone see you as extraordinary."

A pause.

"And seeing myself as invisible."

Evelyn looked at her.

"Emily."

Her voice softened.

"Did I ever make you feel invisible?"

Emily didn't answer.

Because the truth hurt.

No.

Evelyn never had.

"I helped you."

Evelyn continued.

"When your mother was sick, I gave you time off."

Emily looked away.

"When you wanted to continue your education, I paid for the program."

Tears fell down Emily's face.

"I know."

"Then why?"

Emily whispered:

"Because Victor made me believe you only helped people because it made you look good."

Silence.

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

Victor.

Always Victor.

He didn't just manipulate businesses.

He manipulated emotions.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Emily said.

"I know."

Evelyn looked at her.

"And I don't know if I can trust you again."

Emily nodded.

"I understand."

For the first time, Evelyn saw something different.

Not manipulation.

Not excuses.

Regret.

Real regret.

That afternoon, Evelyn called a private meeting with Victor.

Not through lawyers.

Not through media.

Directly.

Victor appeared on a video call.

He smiled when he saw her.

"I assume you found Emily."

Evelyn's expression didn't change.

"You knew?"

"Of course."

A pause.

"She was useful."

Those two words told Evelyn everything.

Emily had betrayed her.

But Victor had used her.

Just like everyone else.

"You don't care about people."

Victor smiled.

"I care about results."

"No."

Evelyn shook her head.

"You care about winning."

Victor leaned closer.

"You know what your problem is?"

Evelyn waited.

"You believe people are better than they are."

A pause.

"That's why they hurt you."

Evelyn looked at him.

"And your problem?"

"What?"

"You believe people are only valuable when they serve you."

Silence.

"And that's why eventually everyone leaves you."

Victor ended the call.

But Evelyn knew something.

The final battle was no longer about money.

It was about exposing the truth.

Not just about Victor.

About everyone involved.

That night, Dominic came to Evelyn's office.

He saw the exhaustion on her face.

"What happened?"

She hesitated.

Then told him.

Emily.

Victor.

Everything.

Dominic listened quietly.

When she finished, he said:

"I'm sorry."

Evelyn looked at him.

"For what?"

"For being the first person who taught him your weakness."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Dominic looked down.

"Your trust."

A pause.

"I showed Victor that hurting you was possible."

Evelyn remained silent.

Then she said something unexpected.

"No."

Dominic looked up.

"Victor hurt me because he chose to."

A pause.

"You hurt me because you were lost."

She looked at him.

"But what matters now is what you choose next."

The next morning, Victor Lang received a message.

Not from Evelyn.

Not from lawyers.

From someone unexpected.

Dominic Hale.

The message contained one sentence:

"You were right about one thing. Everyone has a weakness."

A pause.

Then another sentence:

"Yours is believing nobody will ever stand against you."

Victor stared at the screen.

May you like

For the first time...

He felt something close to fear.
