CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET DOMINIC HID FOR YEARS

Evelyn Whitmore read the report three times.
Not because she didn't understand the words.
Because she couldn't accept them.
The first betrayal had been painful.
The affair.
The lies.
The humiliation in the hotel lobby.
Those things had wounded the woman who loved Dominic.
But this...
This was different.
This was calculated.
This was a plan.
She slowly placed the tablet on her desk.
"How long?"
Richard Alder, her attorney, stood across from her.
"According to the financial records, the preparations started almost eighteen months ago."
Evelyn looked toward the window.
Eighteen months.
A year and a half.
While she was building new hotels.
While she was negotiating international partnerships.
While she was coming home every night believing she was sharing her life with someone who loved her.
Dominic had been preparing an escape plan.
"Explain everything."
Richard opened the file.
"Mr. Hale created several private accounts under different names. He transferred money gradually so it wouldn't trigger immediate attention."
"How much?"
"Approximately three million dollars."
The room went silent.
Evelyn's assistant Emily looked shocked.
"Three million?"
Richard nodded.
"Most of it came from bonuses, expense reimbursements, and unauthorized company benefits."
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
Not from weakness.
From disappointment.
Because suddenly many moments from the past eighteen months made sense.
The sudden business trips.
The secret phone calls.
The strange questions about company structure.
The conversations where Dominic casually asked:
"What would happen if ownership changed?"
At the time, she thought he was curious.
Now she understood.
He was planning.
"Does he know we found this?"
Evelyn asked.
"No."
"Good."
Richard looked surprised.
"You're not confronting him?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
Evelyn picked up the five-dollar bill from her desk drawer.
She had kept it folded exactly the same way since that night.
Everyone assumed it was a reminder of humiliation.
It wasn't.
It was a reminder.
A reminder that arrogance always reveals itself.
"Because Dominic still believes this is about losing his job."
She looked at the bill.
"He hasn't realized the truth yet."
"What truth?"
Evelyn placed it back.
"That the person he underestimated has been watching everything."
Meanwhile, Dominic sat alone in his apartment.
The luxury condo that once felt impressive now felt empty.
No assistants.
No business calls.
No employees waiting for instructions.
Just silence.
He stared at an old photograph sitting on his shelf.
A picture from fifteen years earlier.
Evelyn and him at their first company celebration.
They looked happy.
Young.
Hopeful.
Dominic remembered that version of himself.
The man who admired her.
The man who told everyone he had married the smartest woman he knew.
So when did that change?
When did admiration become jealousy?
When did love become resentment?
His phone rang.
He answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice came through.
"Mr. Hale, we need to discuss the offshore account."
Dominic immediately sat up.
"Not now."
"Sir, the money transfer has been frozen."
His face changed.
"What?"
"The accounts connected to Whitmore Holdings have been flagged."
Dominic stood.
"Who did that?"
A pause.
Then the answer he feared.
"Your wife."
That evening, Vanessa arrived at Dominic's apartment.
She looked different.
Less confident.
Less glamorous.
The woman who once walked through the Sterling Crown laughing now looked nervous.
"You haven't answered my messages."
"I've been busy."
"Busy doing what?"
Dominic poured himself a drink.
"Trying to fix my life."
Vanessa watched him carefully.
"Does Evelyn know?"
He looked at her.
"Know what?"
"About the money."
Silence.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"You didn't tell her?"
"No."
"You were planning to leave her and take money?"
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Her voice became colder.
"I understand perfectly."
She stepped closer.
"You told me she was holding you back."
Dominic looked away.
"You told me she wasn't your equal."
Another step.
"You told me you deserved more."
She shook her head.
"But you never told me you were trying to steal from her."
"I wasn't stealing."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"What would you call it?"
Dominic had no answer.
The next morning, Evelyn arrived at the Sterling Crown earlier than usual.
She walked through the lobby alone.
The same lobby.
The same marble floor.
The same place where Dominic had chosen another woman over her.
But this time, something was different.
She was not there as a wife.
She was there as the owner.
Every employee stood straighter when she entered.
Not because they feared her.
Because they respected her.
Carter approached.
"Madam Chair."
"Yes?"
"The board meeting has been prepared."
"Good."
He hesitated.
"Will Mr. Hale attend?"
Evelyn looked toward the elevator.
"Yes."
"And Vanessa Blake?"
"No."
Carter nodded.
Then Evelyn added:
"Not because she isn't involved."
She paused.
"But because this meeting is about Dominic."
At 9:00 AM, Dominic entered the boardroom.
He looked confident again.
Too confident.
"I assume this is about my reinstatement."
Nobody answered.
He looked at Evelyn.
"You said there was still a chance."
She nodded.
"There is."
A small smile appeared on his face.
Then Richard placed a file in front of him.
Dominic opened it.
His smile disappeared.
The offshore accounts.
The transfers.
The hidden documents.
Everything.
His face turned pale.
"Evelyn..."
She remained silent.
"You investigated me?"
"No."
She looked directly at him.
"I discovered you."
The words cut deeper.
Dominic closed the folder.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation.
Only excuses.
Only choices.
Only consequences.
Evelyn stood.
"Yesterday, I wondered if the man I married was still somewhere inside you."
She walked toward the door.
"Today, I have my answer."
Dominic looked at her.
"Please..."
She stopped.
Without turning around, she said:
"The saddest part, Dominic..."
A pause.
"...is that Vanessa never destroyed our marriage."
She looked back.
"You did."
Then she left.
That night, Dominic received a final message.
Legal separation documents delivered.
For the first time, he didn't feel angry.
He didn't feel betrayed.
He didn't blame Evelyn.
Because deep down...
He knew.
The woman he lost was not the woman who ruined him.
May you like
She was the woman who gave him everything.
And he was the man who thought it wasn't enough.
