CHAPTER 4 — THE HUSBAND RETURNS BEGGING FOR A SECOND CHANCE

Dominic Hale had spent three days trying to convince himself that everything could still be repaired.
Three days of unanswered calls.
Three days of staring at his empty office.
Three days of watching people who once greeted him with respect suddenly treat him like a stranger.
He hated it.
Not just losing the position.
Not just losing the money.
He hated the feeling of becoming invisible.
Because Dominic had spent years believing his importance came from the title beside his name.
Executive Vice President.
Senior Partner.
The man who sat beside Evelyn Whitmore.
But now the title was gone.
And for the first time, he had to face a terrifying question.
Who was Dominic Hale without Evelyn?
The answer disturbed him.
The morning of his meeting with Evelyn, Dominic arrived at the Sterling Crown earlier than scheduled.
He wore his best suit.
The same navy suit he had worn the night he humiliated her.
But this time, there was no confidence.
No arrogance.
Only fear.
The lobby looked exactly the same.
Crystal chandelier.
Polished marble.
Luxury guests walking through the entrance.
But Dominic felt like he was standing in a completely different world.
A world where everyone knew the truth.
Carter approached the reception desk.
"Mr. Hale."
Dominic looked at him.
"Carter."
The young man nodded.
"Mrs. Whitmore is ready for you."
Mrs. Whitmore.
Not Evelyn.
Not your wife.
The distinction hurt more than Dominic expected.
He followed Carter toward the private elevator.
As the doors closed, Dominic saw his reflection.
For the first time, he noticed something he had ignored for years.
He looked tired.
Older.
Smaller.
The executive office was quiet when Dominic entered.
Evelyn stood near the window.
She was looking over the city.
The same view Dominic had admired from the Presidential Suite.
Except now he understood.
She wasn't looking at a beautiful city.
She was looking at something she built.
"Sit down," Evelyn said.
Dominic sat.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, he whispered:
"Evelyn."
She turned.
"Yes?"
"I made a mistake."
Her expression didn't change.
Those words surprised him.
He expected anger.
Tears.
A reaction.
Anything.
But Evelyn gave him nothing.
"I know."
Dominic swallowed.
"I was angry."
"No."
She interrupted softly.
"You were insecure."
The words hit harder because they were true.
"I felt like I was always living in your shadow."
Evelyn looked at him.
"And instead of becoming your own person, you decided to punish me for shining."
Dominic looked down.
"I never meant to hurt you."
She studied him carefully.
"That is the problem, Dominic."
"What?"
"You think pain only matters when it is intentional."
Silence.
"You didn't wake up one morning and decide to destroy our marriage."
She walked toward the desk.
"But every day, you made small choices."
A pause.
"Every lie."
"Every secret."
"Every time you let Vanessa disrespect me."
Her voice remained calm.
"Those choices became a betrayal."
Dominic leaned forward.
"Please."
It was the first time Evelyn had heard desperation in his voice.
"Don't end twenty years because of one mistake."
Evelyn looked at him.
"One mistake?"
Dominic immediately regretted the words.
Because he knew.
This wasn't one mistake.
It was hundreds.
The forgotten anniversaries.
The excuses.
The resentment.
The way he slowly convinced himself that her success was his humiliation.
"I can change," he said.
Evelyn almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because she had heard those words before.
"Everyone says they can change when they finally lose something."
Dominic's eyes filled slightly.
"Do you really feel nothing?"
That question stopped her.
For a moment, the powerful businesswoman disappeared.
And the woman who had loved him for twenty years appeared.
"I feel everything."
Her voice softened.
"That is why I am disappointed."
Dominic looked up.
"If I hated you, this would be easier."
The silence between them became heavier.
"I loved you."
A pause.
"I defended you."
Another pause.
"I believed in you."
She looked away.
"And you spent years trying to prove that you deserved more than me."
Dominic stood.
"Is there any chance?"
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
Outside the window, helicopters moved across the skyline.
Business continued.
Life continued.
Finally, she spoke.
"I don't know."
Those three words gave Dominic a small spark of hope.
But then she continued.
"And that is the first honest thing I have said to you in months."
He closed his eyes.
"What happens now?"
Evelyn sat behind her desk.
"Legally, the investigation continues."
He nodded.
"And personally?"
She looked at him.
"Personally, I need time to decide if the man I married is still somewhere inside the person standing here."
As Dominic left the office, he felt something unexpected.
Not anger.
Not humiliation.
Fear.
Because for the first time, he realized Evelyn wasn't trying to punish him.
She wasn't trying to destroy him.
She was simply moving forward.
With or without him.
And that frightened him more than losing everything.
Outside the hotel, Vanessa waited.
The moment Dominic stepped out, she approached.
"Well?"
He looked at her.
"What?"
"Did she forgive you?"
Dominic stared silently.
Vanessa understood.
"No."
He looked away.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Then what?"
A long silence.
Finally Dominic said:
"She didn't hate me."
Vanessa laughed.
"That's supposed to make you feel better?"
Dominic looked back at the towering hotel.
"No."
A pause.
"It makes me realize how much worse I made things."
That evening, Evelyn received a message.
A private investigator.
A new discovery.
Something hidden in Dominic's financial records.
Something even she didn't know.
She opened the file.
Her expression changed.
Because the betrayal was deeper than an affair.
Much deeper.
At the bottom of the report was one sentence:
"There is evidence Mr. Hale has been planning to separate from you while securing personal assets."
Evelyn stared at the screen.
The room became silent.
For the first time in days...
Her calm disappeared.
May you like
Because Dominic hadn't just betrayed her heart.
He had been preparing to betray her empire.
