CHAPTER 7 — THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The message remained on the screen.
Bright.
Cold.
Impossible.
ELIZABETH CROSS — YOUR FATHER IS STILL ALIVE.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone in that room understood what those words meant.
The man who had been buried in history...
The man who had supposedly disappeared thirty years ago...
The man whose name had become a legend whispered only by powerful people...
Was alive.
Adrian Cross.
My biological father.
The ghost who had shaped my entire life without ever being there.
I looked at Alexander.
His face told me everything.
He wasn't surprised.
He was terrified.
"How long?"
My voice was barely audible.
He didn't answer.
"How long have you known?"
Alexander looked at me.
"Elizabeth..."
"How long?"
A painful silence.
Then:
"Since tonight."
I studied his expression.
For the first time, I wasn't looking at him as my father.
I was looking at him as a man.
A man who had lied.
A man who had hidden pieces of my life.
A man who still wasn't telling me everything.
Victoria laughed softly.
"Still protecting her."
Alexander turned toward her.
"Enough."
"No."
Victoria's eyes remained on me.
"She deserves the truth."
I looked at her.
"Do you?"
The question surprised her.
"What?"
"You spent thirty years hiding too."
Her smile disappeared.
"You think because you know secrets, you own the truth."
I stepped forward.
"But you are just another person who decided Elizabeth Cross was a piece on a chessboard."
The room went silent.
Even Marcus looked surprised.
Because the woman who had entered that vault hours ago...
Broken.
Confused.
Searching for answers...
Was gone.
I still wanted the truth.
But I was no longer begging for it.
Victoria studied me carefully.
Then smiled.
"There she is."
"Who?"
"The woman Adrian knew you would become."
A sound came from above.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Everyone immediately raised their weapons.
Marcus moved in front of me.
Alexander did the same.
Victoria's guards turned toward the entrance.
The vault door opened.
Nobody entered.
For five seconds...
Nothing.
Then a man appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But powerful.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
A face carrying thirty years of pain.
I knew immediately.
Not because I remembered him.
Because something inside me did.
My heart knew before my mind did.
Adrian Cross.
My father.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
He looked at me.
And stopped.
All the confidence disappeared from his face.
For the first time, he wasn't a legend.
He was just a father seeing his daughter.
A daughter he lost before she could remember him.
"Elizabeth."
The way he said my name broke something inside me.
I hated that.
Because I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to be angry.
But instead...
I felt grief.
For a relationship I never had.
For memories we never created.
For a childhood he missed.
"You are real."
The words came out before I could stop them.
A small, painful smile appeared on his face.
"So are you."
I didn't move.
"Why?"
One word.
Everything inside it.
Why did you leave?
Why didn't you find me?
Why did you let me believe you were dead?
Why did my mother die?
Adrian understood.
"I know."
"No."
My voice hardened.
"You don't."
I looked at him.
"You missed thirty years."
His eyes lowered.
"I know."
"You missed every birthday."
"I know."
"You missed my first day of school."
His expression broke.
"I know."
"You missed everything."
A tear appeared in his eyes.
But he didn't wipe it away.
Because he knew he had no right to pretend he wasn't hurt.
"I counted every day."
The room became silent.
"I knew exactly how old you were."
"I knew when you lost your first tooth."
"I knew when you graduated."
"I knew when you got married."
I froze.
"You watched me?"
He nodded.
"From a distance."
Anger returned.
"Then why didn't you come?"
His answer was quiet.
"Because every person close to me died."
A pause.
"And I believed if I came to you..."
"You would die too."
Nobody spoke.
Even Victoria looked away.
Adrian slowly entered the room.
Alexander didn't lower his weapon.
"You should be dead."
Adrian looked at him.
"I know."
The two men stared at each other.
Two friends.
Two enemies.
Two men who had carried thirty years of secrets.
"You let her believe I abandoned her."
Alexander's expression tightened.
"You were gone."
"I was imprisoned."
"Same result."
Adrian looked at him.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"Not the same."
The tension between them was immediate.
I looked between them.
"What happened?"
Neither answered.
I stepped forward.
"No more."
Everyone looked at me.
"No more secrets."
My voice echoed.
"I have spent my entire life being protected from the truth."
I looked at Adrian.
"I want all of it."
Then Alexander.
"All of it."
Then Victoria.
"All of it."
Nobody spoke.
Until Adrian nodded.
"Okay."
He looked at the walls around us.
"Then we begin with the night your mother died."
My heart tightened.
"Tell me."
Adrian took a breath.
"The night your mother died..."
He looked at Alexander.
"...I was not the person who betrayed her."
Alexander looked away.
"Then who was?"
Adrian's eyes moved toward me.
And what he said next changed everything.
"Your mother discovered that the person controlling the Meridian Circle..."
A pause.
"...was someone she trusted completely."
I felt cold.
"Who?"
Adrian looked at Alexander.
Then at Victoria.
Then finally at me.
"The person who created the entire conspiracy..."
"Was your grandfather."
The world stopped.
"My grandfather?"
Adrian nodded.
"Your mother's father."
I couldn't breathe.
"But he died before I was born."
Adrian's expression became darker.
"That's what everyone was told."
A new screen activated behind him.
An old photograph appeared.
A family portrait.
My mother.
My grandfather.
My grandmother.
And beside them...
A young Alexander Vale.
My blood ran cold.
Because Alexander wasn't just my father's friend.
He was part of my family history.
Adrian whispered:
"Elizabeth..."
"Your entire life was built around one lie."
The photograph zoomed in.
A hidden mark appeared.
The same symbol.
The broken circle.
"The Meridian Circle didn't find you."
Adrian looked directly at me.
"They created you."
The vault doors suddenly locked.
Automatically.
Everyone turned.
A message appeared.
EXTERNAL BREACH DETECTED.
Marcus checked the system.
His face changed.
"No."
"What?"
He looked at us.
"We have another team approaching."
"Who?"
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then slowly answered:
"The Ashfords."
My stomach dropped.
Nathan.
But Marcus shook his head.
"Not Nathan."
A pause.
"The entire Ashford family."
The screen showed dozens of vehicles approaching.
And leading them...
Was an elderly man.
The founder of the Ashford empire.
Nathan's father.
The man who had created the dynasty.
Adrian looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
"He's here."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
Adrian's expression turned dark.
"The man who helped destroy your mother's life."
May you like
A pause.
"Your husband's grandfather."
